Winston Salem, NC. Old Salem. Museum of Southern Decorative Arts. Reynolda House which may have an great exhibit. AAA baseball team. Great food. Smallish town.
Nearby is Seagrove south of Greensboro, an absolute gem of a pottery area--60 local potters of all stripes.
Charlotte and environs (1.5 hours to Columbia). Latta Place (Catawba River plantation of late 1700s). Reid Gold Mine (gold rush of 1849). Numerous museums--don't miss the Bechtler downtown. Price's Chicken Coop--best fried chicken in the world!! Plenty of quirkiness on Central Avenue eateries. AAA Charlotte Knights in a great ballpark. Ben Long frescoes in St. Peter's Catholic church and BankofAmerica headquarters.
