Place to stay for 2 nights.

My husband and I will be flying in to Fort Lauderdale on a Thursday at 5 o'clock. We have reservations in Key west for Saturday to Saturday. We need a suggestion on where to stay for 2 nights. We don't want to be in the car too long. We want to stay somewhere very nice, on a beach and heading in the direction of Key West. We were looking at Key Largo but would take any recommendations.

The Marriott in Key Largo is wonderful ! Great rooms, great views - beautiful sunsets there ! There are good restaurants in the area also. The Sundowner has good food and nice water views. The Fish House has good food with no view.

If it were me, I would find a place on the beach in Fort Laudedale for that first night since you're arriving late afternoon. Then the next day you could take a ride thru the Everglades, stopping at Anhinga Trail, a great place to view wildlife on your way to Key West. You could then stop at Key Largo for the night (not my favorite place, I think farther south has more of a tropical feel)
Above type in Florida Keys and you will get tons of info.

Thanks cd and flbronc!! I was looking at the Marriott for a possible choice so it helped that you had a positive experience. I would love to do your suggestion cd but I don't want to hotel hop the first two nights. Just coming off tax season, we need a place to just veg out the first 2 nights so we will be ready for Key West!! Any other suggestions will be appreciated

personally, i really don't care for the marriott in key largo. very typical marriott. if you don't mind driving another hour (though flbronc is right, it would probably be 8:00 by the time you rent a car and get down the 1), i'd really recommend Cheeca Lodge. it's on the atlantic side, MM82. wonderful spa, great beachside pool, walk to restaurants. check them out at cheecalodge.com.
