Cracked conch in Key Largo

I stopped in at this local as I saw a show on Food Network. We got there and no one came out to greet us for 5 minutes, it was small dark and musty odor. We sat to eat and waited 10 mintues to order. I received my cup of soup and there were ants on the table, ants on the crackers and crawling in my soup. My husband's dolphin tasted like it was dropped in the sand and served, real gritty, my son's wasnn't all that great for $63.00 I would NOT recommend this place

You stayed (in the dark) after not being greeted, seeing bugs, smelling odors, AND you ordered the (sand-rubbed!) dolphin? hmmmm...trolling for responses?

I think you might pay that much at one of Ganim's restaurants, but I'm surprised the Crack'd Conch was that much. Thanks for the update though, we'll be in Key Largo in a month and I'll steer away from there.
Does anybody have any suggestions on where to get the best Cuban sandwiches? Thanks!

there is a small Cuban cafe just south of the Key Largo Marriott, on the west side of the highway. It is in a blue and white building, nothing fancy, looks a bit run down, but their food is excellent. I can not vouch for the Cuban sandwiches, but the breakfast menu is outstanding and very authentic. Owned by a Cuban family. It is very, very good. Sorry I can not recall the name, but it was suggested by one of the bartenders at the Marriott so it is a popular local place. Check it out.

lv2eat: while this doesn't absolve poor service and bad food, you were there, I believe, in the aftermath of a major weather event, no? Like a HURRICANE? The Cracked Conch is normally good, would you say conditions in the Keys are normal?

SanParis: are you kidding that you don't even know what this place is? The Cracked Conch is a Key Largo institution- and it is right on the side of the road and has been there for years. And as far as not being aware you could spend $63 for dinner in Key Largo, lv2eat spent that much for at least 3 people (she mentions a husband and son). Just last Saturday night I spent $80 on dinner and drinks for 2 at the Buzzard's Roost, and have spent a similar sum for dinner for two at the Fish House, Sundowners, and a few others. Are you sure you've ever even BEEN to Key Largo?

Ccolor- the Cuban Restaurant that Curt is refering to is called the Marlin and is very good for Cuban food.

Cuban Restaurant - Marlin. Got it and thanks to you both! We're staying at the Best Western so it's really close.....a'course I guess there isn't much that could be considered far away in any of the Keys, now is there?

ccolor, the dolphin was $22 per person, 3 glasses of ice tea, 1 cup of soup, 1 fritter. That is it and with all tax 63.00! Maybe at lunch it is better but after a long flight and driving down from fll I expected better. We were so exhausted and hungry, I still would avoid that place.
