Pittsburgh in Early October

I have had such good luck getting suggestions for other cities so here I am again. We are going to Pittsburgh from Oct. 6-9, 2005 and looking for suggestions and advice. We are staying at the Holiday Inn Express and Suites on the Southside (20 South 10th Street). We will only have a car for one day to go to see Falling Water. Will we be all right in this area without a car the other days? We are hoping to go to the the Penguin v. Bruin game on the 8th - is the Mellon Arena a far cab ride from where we are staying? Can we walk to Station Square? Any opinions on Club Cafe on 12th Street? Thank you for taking the time to read this and possibly help!

Nano:

Mellon Arena isn't far away at all from the Holiday Inn Express in South Side. For the pure convenience you may want to get a taxi. However, you can get a bus 5-- South Side (Port Authority 412-442-2000) that goes down Carson Street and over to downtown Pittsburgh. Don't know if you can get a bus that goes as far down as Station Square/Smithfield Street Bridge. If that was the case you could get off there and catch a subway at Station Square which would get you over the river to Steel Plaza and that is a short walk to Mellon Arena. From South Side there is a 54C that goes very regularly to the Univ of Pgh/Oakland area if you want to see museums. From Oakland you could catch various other buslines to get to different city neighborhoods. So I'd say if you just want to stay in the city it would be pretty easy to see the urban sites via public transportation, if you want to venture to the countryside and suburbs I'd highly suggest a car. Hint: remember to make Kentuck Knob (another Wright creation) a stop also or Ohiopyle State Park a side trip that day. It will be peak for fall colors in the Laurel Highlands and when walking on the bike trail in this park the colors are amazing just be nice and courteous to the bikes. It is not far from Fallingwater and it is a Frank Lloyd Wright creation.

Station Square is an unwalkable option. It is very far away (35 blocks - at least) from where you are staying and I'm somebody that likes/enjoys walking.

Kal - Thanks so much for top posting for me and Stephanie thanks so much for your wonderful and helpful reply - I am looking forward to seeing Pittsburgh again (I haven't been there in years). I am from Chicago so I was looking forward to seeing the White Sox in the World Series - at this particular moment with Cleveland on our tail it is not looking as good as it was but I am hopeful!
