Picnic lunch for Alcatraz?

I have seen suggestions to take a lunch to picnic on Alcatraz. If it is a pretty day and this is a good idea, are there some good places to pick up lunch items around the pier?

As far as I know, there isn't a picnic area on Alcatraz. It's not a place where I would want to eat - lots of bird droppings everywhere. But maybe others think otherwise.

Alcatraz isn't very pretty..the view to SF is great if it's a clear day, but frankly, it's no place I would want to picnic. Angel Island is much nicer for a picnic if you have the time and again a great view of the City.

Hi bwhewitt, I agree, Alcatraz is not where you want to have a picnic....the bird droppings are all over. Either go in the morning and come back and have lunch or go to lunch and go in the afternoon. Have fun in SF!

Maybe you read something about "Angel Island" - another great Ferry ride in S.F. Bay - and you can certainly pack a picnic for that one.

Yes, Angel Island is a nice place for a picnic! Alcatraz is where the prison was, and again where all the bird droppings are. Angel Island is no doubt what you read about. If you want to get some yummy food for a picnic there are lots of places in SF where you can buy that including in North Beach (deli's) and at the Ferry Bldg. Have fun!

Might I suggest either a devil chocolate cake or a coconut cream pie with a file baked in!

I get the feeling it is like Trafalgar Square in London, with sea birds instead of pigeons. Hope it isn't like Hitchcock's movie!

We went in March and took the first boat over. It was nice because there were not a ton of people wandering around when we were there. We were also able finish up and take a boat back over to the wharf area just before the usual lunch time. I can't remember where we ate, but it was good and we beat the crowds that way. So just an idea to time it right.

Another recommendation for Angel Island for a picnic.

The birds on Alcatraz are definitely numerous, but they aren't a terrible nuisance. They just make it not the best place for a picnic.

bwhewitt, you will not be "attacked" by the birds, in fact, I believe part of the island is designated a bird sanctuary. You will have a great time at Alcatraz (city views are incredible). Just plan on eating somewhere else.

Have a wonderful time - we love San Francisco!
