Yes, Angel Island is a nice place for a picnic! Alcatraz is where the prison was, and again where all the bird droppings are. Angel Island is no doubt what you read about. If you want to get some yummy food for a picnic there are lots of places in SF where you can buy that including in North Beach (deli's) and at the Ferry Bldg. Have fun!

We went in March and took the first boat over. It was nice because there were not a ton of people wandering around when we were there. We were also able finish up and take a boat back over to the wharf area just before the usual lunch time. I can't remember where we ate, but it was good and we beat the crowds that way. So just an idea to time it right.

bwhewitt, you will not be "attacked" by the birds, in fact, I believe part of the island is designated a bird sanctuary. You will have a great time at Alcatraz (city views are incredible). Just plan on eating somewhere else.Have a wonderful time - we love San Francisco!
