Patti LuPone in Gypsy

Patti LuPone is starring in a 3-week summer production of Gypsy at the City Center. We went last night and it was a very enjoyable show.

We bought $25 tickets about 3 days in advance of the show. The seats were very far back, so we couldn't make out the actors' faces, except with binoculars. We could hear perfectly well. We ended up moving to the back of the theater, where the last 4 rows or so were empty. It was much easier to see without anyone's heads directly in front of us. If I were to go again, I would definitely spring for better seats.

We had a pre-theater dinner across the street at Circo. We just walked up at 6:15 pm and requested an outside table. Dinner was good - 2 entrees and 3 glasses of wine came to $95 plus tip.

I hope someone can use this information.

City Center is a huge theater--it used to be a Masonic Temple. Glad you enjoyed the show.

My mother has seen everyone who has performed as Mama Rose in Gypsy from Ethel Merman on, and she said Patti LuPone was the greatest thing she's ever seen.

happytrailstoyou - I did think the theater was huge. What an interesting background.

Abby43 - Wow! Your lucky mother. I do love Patti LuPone, but to say she is the greatest when compared to Ethel Merman is really something.

That's just my mom's opinion, but she loved them all. I saw it years ago with Tyne Daly and she was also terrific. Yes, my mother is lucky and goes to all the shows, but I'm luckier b/c a lot of the time I am her date (dad is not keen on all shows, just some)!
