It depends on why you're going.
To see the zoo - go when it's open.
To rent a boat for the lake? Ditto
To see something in particular - changing leaves? bird migration? Softball games from the broadway show league?
Give us a clue.

Peak fall colors in NYC's Central Park are hard to pin down because a lot depends on the average temperatures and amount of rainfall there is in the weeks preceeding Autumn. Generally speaking the leaves will start turning during the latter part of September and reach their peak sometime in the 2nd or 3rd week of October. You are dealing with mother nature here so there's no guarantee - peak color could vary by as much as 10 days on either side of those dates.
