I will be in New York the first week of November. Is it possible to get panettone at that time of year and where is the best place to get it?

We only get it packaged from Italy here in Hawaii. Are there good bakeries that make it fresh in New York?

I had a form of sweet bread with candied fruit in Genoa, but it had a different name. The gal in the bakery there called it by a different name. Anyone know what that might be?

Sorry -- meant to say that the gal at the bakery we went to in Genoa said it was like panettone but a little different. It tasted very similar to me.

Strangely enough, most well-known Italian bakeries I know in NYC that have--guess what--packages of panettone from Italy.

Isn't that funny? We have a pretty good (and cheap!) panettone at Costco here at Christmas time. It lasts forever. Having come all the way from Italy first, do you think it's full of preservatives? (Still tastes yummy if it does!)

I went to a place in California that had shelves full of different kinds. I didn't even know where to start.

You also might try Veniero's on the East Side, 11th St. and 1st Ave. Everything there is made onsite and alot of the better restaurants in the city get their pasteries from Veniero's.

I had looked on the Veniero's website and didn't see any panettone. I found 2 interesting threads on chowhound you might want to read. One talks about the brand sold at Costco (it's evidently quite good).

I live on the same block as Veniero's--no homemade panettone. Nor at DiRobertis across the avenue.

Wow, panettone! This transplanted Sicilian New Yorker sure misses all the Italian groceries that are unavailable in the islands. Oh for fresh home made mozzarella, proscutto, sausages, and good TOMATOES!!!!!! My mouth waters just thinking about it.

Our last trip to NYC we took one empty suitcase and filled it with all the above. We feasted for weeks.

Yes, Costco does have all the above but somehow it doesn't taste the same.

By the way, try "Artisan" bread available here on Sundays at the Foodland. Wow, almost like little Italy.
