Overnight stop between Cheyenne,WY and Reno?

Planning on driving from Cheyenne to SF. Thinking about making a one night stop between Cheyenne,WY and Reno, then spending one night in Reno before heading to SF. What town/or towns would you recommend? What about west of Salt Lake City, maybe in Northern NV? We usually drive 500/600 miles a day. Hotel/Motel doesn't have to be fancy, just clean/comfortable for good rest.

123go, see if you can find a website for Elko, NV. It is in the area you are thinking of. More or less a Basque community. I haven't been there for awhile but always loved the Basque restaurants. Best regards.

Elko is a little outside the mileage range you stated at 669 miles from Cheyenne. If you did not want to drive quite that far, there are hotels at Wendover and Wells. Also, Salt Lake City is just about at the halfway mark between Cheyenne and Reno.

Have a good trip.

I'm driving from Ind to SF and looking forward to staying/dining at the Cheyenne Hitching Post, are you from Cheyenne? We had such a nice clean room and dining was so wonderful, food service ambiance, the only fine dining on tablecloths during our WY trip, lol, great food everywhere but much more casual. We stayed in SLC at a beautiful BW and it was miserable, room and dinner. How are you planning your route? I'm still reading to find the safest and best path and fun 'must see's' along my way. Hope your trip is safe and enjoyable.

Thanks everyone for the information. No, Bodi, I am not from Cheyenne. I noticed your post after I posted yesterday. I think you have received some very good advise on that post also. We will be doing almost the same route picking up I-80 in Des Monies. Which is 5 hours for us. We will probably stay in Kearney,NE or if things go well we may try for a longer day and go to North Plate. May stay in Cheyenne and then try Elko or Wells as suggested on this post. We will be going later. I like planning ahead so everything is organized. We usually stop every 2-3 hours for 10 minutes. Sometimes if not to tired, just to walk around the car. It really helps. I sometimes get such a tight, burning stiffness at the base of my neck and toward my right shoulder. (Anyone have a remedy for that?) So it feels good to get out and stretch. I have to do all the driving. We usually have coffee and toast at the motel and stop late morning for breakfast or light salad. We have our cooler with water, pop and fruit. We do not book rooms ahead. If we find somewhere we want to explore for a few hours we do and stop for the evening wherever it works out. However, usually have some idea what towns we would like to stay in if possible. We will probably do 4 or 5 days out. Will be coming back the same route (might vary a little) so will have the opportunity to see what we miss on the way out. Do want to check out Cheyenne and Elko sounds like fun. Hope there are antique stores!! Enjoy your trip. Please post here and let me know how it went for you, where you stayed and what you thought.

Hi 123go, for your burning shoulder try this in the evening and again in the morning before you get in the car.
Walk your fingers up the wall, streching as far as you can. Probably wouldn't hurt to do that with your left arm also. I learned that trick when I had a serious left shoulder problem. Another Fodorite who broke her shoulder was told to do this also.
It really helps. Best wishes and have a wonderful road trip!!

Thanks LoveItaly for the shoulder suggestion. I'll give it a try.

dwoodden - have you stayed in any of the hotel/motels/bed&breakfast establishments in Elko, Wells or Wendover? If so, any favorites? Want to try those Basque restaurants in Elko for sure.

I've stayed in Wendover two or three times. There is (was?) one large casino/hotel on the Nevada side just after you come across the border from Utah. I don't remember its name. The rooms are quite reasonable and acceptable but nothing special. I don't remember being overly impressed with any of the dining options. It was basically just a place to lay my head between driving legs.

I used Google, and found a site that gave me information about Wells, Wendover, Winnemucca and lots of other small towns. I wonder if you stayed at the 4-Ways Casino, dwoodden? Looks like we will have lots of choices, and should find something reasonable just for good night rest. Still eating in Elko!
