I've driven cross-country a few times and I suggest under-estimating your daily mileage/time and scouting out hotels ahead of time - right on your driving route. I always booked a late-arrival, so I didn't worry about my room getting cancelled, if I took a side trip that lasted longer than I had planned. The last thing I felt like doing by the time it got dark (and I was tired) was searching for a clean, safe place to spend the night. If I made good time and hit my next stop-over early, I did some exploring, got the locals to point me towards the best food in town and got an early start in the morning. Much better than having to drive an extra two hours because you passed the last town with a hotel! And take a small, soft cooler for snacks in the car and just use it as your carry-on for the flight home. Have fun!!!
