California to Virginia
I am going to travel across US south during November. We are going to drive across and fly back. This is a dream come true!!! Any suggestions since it has never been done???

How long do you have and what sorts of things/places do you want to see?

I've driven cross-country a few times and I suggest under-estimating your daily mileage/time and scouting out hotels ahead of time - right on your driving route. I always booked a late-arrival, so I didn't worry about my room getting cancelled, if I took a side trip that lasted longer than I had planned. The last thing I felt like doing by the time it got dark (and I was tired) was searching for a clean, safe place to spend the night. If I made good time and hit my next stop-over early, I did some exploring, got the locals to point me towards the best food in town and got an early start in the morning. Much better than having to drive an extra two hours because you passed the last town with a hotel! And take a small, soft cooler for snacks in the car and just use it as your carry-on for the flight home. Have fun!!!

Here's a quick tip: On your West to East drive, stop for the night on the East side of whatever city you're overnighting in. The next morning when you're ready to hit the road, you won't have rush hour traffic to deal with.

Betsy - what a great tip - I am adding that one to my book of tricks!

where are good cities/hotels to stay at when I am traveling? |
Are you taking the northern route or the southern route? What are some of the special places that are on your must-see list?
