Outerbanks - where the heck to go!?
Hello everybody!
My boyfriend and I are driving from Ottawa, Canada to North Carolina next week for a 10 day roadtrip. We will stop in Philadelphia for a day or 2, and spend about 5 nights in the Outerbanks.
We have no clue where to base ourselves. We'll be doing a mix of camping and staying at affordable Inns. We are 26ys old, and don't party too much, but don't want to feel completely isolated in a simple beach town. We want to still have options of festivals, shipwrecks, cool restaurants, etc...
Questions:
-Do the beaches get prettier as you go down south along the Outer Banks?
-Is Duck any good?
-If we save the gas money and stay on the Northern Banks, will we miss out on anything?
Thank you!

Have you booked anything at all? Be advised that many people are coming from the Gulf, so you may want to nail something down before you leave. Beach in summer is popular. It will not be simple this time of year.
Having said that, the southern parts of the Banks are not as crowded as the northern, more easily accessible parts. You may prefer Kitty Hawk and Nags Head.
To your questions:
Not necessarily prettier but different. Ocracoke Island is a lovely place and the lighthouses are always worth seeing.
Duck is fabulous.
You will miss lots by staying at the north end. You might want to google Ocracoke and Hatteras to see if there are things there you want to do. Good luck.

I second the comment that Duck is fabulous. Spent a few summers down there renting a home for a week at a time with family. Always had a marvelous time. You can go to the Currituck lighthouse. When we visited, you could still climb to the top. Not sure if that is still an option or not as I have not been there in about ten years or more.
Definitely go to the huge sand dunes and bring a kite to fly.

Thanks for your replies. Just a few follow up questions.
Suewoo: when you say "you will miss lots by staying in the northern end" what exactly are you referring to?
Mixter603: what is so amazing about Duck?

The Hatteras Lighthouse, amazing beaches at Avon and Rodanthe and most of all Ocracoke Island and the requisite ferry ride to get there. But there are fewer places to stay in the south end so IMHO, you should do some research and reserve something before you go, rather than just take a chance on getting a place on the beach in summer. Beach+summer=people. Have fun.

Alot of people stay around the Nags Head area. If you go further south, I really like the Hatteras Island area - not nearly as commerical. It is also fun to take the ferry ride over to Ocracoke from there.

Check out B&Bs along the Outer Banks and Manteo - and a ride down Hatteras Is (option to Ocracoke - not much there, but cute) is well worth the isolated experience.
Whether or not you're windsurfers you might like to join your compatriots at the Canadien Hole on Hatteras Is. Just a popular wind/kite surfing spot just south of Avon. Not much 'nightlife' in this area but restaurants from fancy food to the basic 'fried or broiled' are great!
