I spent about a week in Oregon a couple years ago, most in Portland and east area, but a couple days where I based in Cannon Beach.
The area around Astoria was the favorite part of my trip in that area, but I'm a big history buff. I loved the Maritime Museum and the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, which I don't think you even mentioned.
Now I didn't stay in Astoria itself, that wasn't anything special, just those attractions which are fairly significant if you are interested in history of the area.

Andrew...Got it! I can stay a 3rd night in Portland by eliminating Hood River overnight and arrive at Timberline Lodge as it is scheduled. Very doable. Really makes a lot of sense to me!
Christina --Will consider hitting some sights in Astoria and still sleep in Cannon Beach.

When you leave Portland and head down the Gorge, take OLD highway 30 to Multnoma falls, stopping at the smaller falls along the way. The drive itself is beautiful and more fun than the interstate. We have lived in Oregon, near the coast for almost 40 years and you can't schedule too much time there. Glad to hear you are going for 2 nights in Newport. Oregon Aquarium and Hatfield Marine Science Center are worth the stop.
