Oregon for 8 days
Hi all
MY Husband and I are going to fly to Portland June 24th. Our plan is to rent a car and take 8 days to drive it back to Reno. We were thinking of staying one night in Portland. Not sure which area, we like to walk around and see new cities, but are not very interested in doing any tours. Just wander around eat some good food. Not sure if we want to spend 1 or 2 nights there. We would also like to spend maybe one or 2 nights in the Willamette Valley. The one thing we do want to do is play a little golf. I was thinking to spend the rest of our trip heading south along the coast. We were hoping to not have to have room reservation except the first night in Portland, that way if we find something we like maybe stay a little longer. I'm sure I need to add more but if anyone has any comments to help us we would appreciate it. I would also be happy to add more if needed. Thanks in advance

LOL Kal...I'm first !!!
cleo, you need hotel reservations..
It is considered by some to be one of the top destinations in the US..hotels are booked in advance.. The hotels along the Coast have minimum night stays.
You need to figure out where you want to be and for how long, then ask about hotels.
My friend beachbum can tell you about Bandon if that is the sort of golf you are talking about.

Things generally don't heat up on the coast - either the weather or the tourism - until after July 4, but I agree that you'd want reservations. Especially if you hope to stay in nice places...
Where do you want to play golf? Portland area, the coast, or somewhere else? Bandon Dunes would be an obvious choice, but if you don't have tee times by now, it'll be tough. Best public play course around Portland is Pumpkin Ridge, 25 miles west.
Not sure what you have in mind for Willamette Valley unless it's wine tasting, and I'd recommend against two days for just that.
As Scarlett says, we could be more helpful if we knew more, but to give you an idea of things you could do/see: dune buggy ride, Crater Lake, jetboat ride up the Rogue River, Ashland Shakespeare Festival, redwoods..... and the list goes on...
Now, to reset...

Thanks for the replies. Ok so now I guess I would like to know which areas are neat to stay. We like lighthouses and the dune buggy thing sounds like fun. I saw a post about Yachats but maybe up north a little too. I researched Gold Beach Coos Bay, Bandon and Brookings a little. Maybe then one night in Willamette Valley? Yes for wine tasting
OK again thanks for the help

Hey Kal, you're in ***good*** company if you think Sokol Blosser pinots are killer, but I've got bottles from other wineries that I bet would change your mind.
Cleo, the heart of wine country is only an hour from Portland, so you could do it as a day trip, or spend a night at a B&B there after tasting, then head to the coast the next day.
Dune buggy rides are near Florence, so Yachats would be a good first stop on the coast. Of the other places you mention, pick Bandon over Coos Bay, and Gold Beach over Brookings. You'll see at least a couple lighthouses along the way: Haceta Head south of Yachats, and Coquille River Lighthouse near Bandon.
Happy to help, but we really can't fill in blanks for you until we know what you're thinking.

Thanks beachbum for some great ideas. I will start researching some of the areas you suggested. I don't really want to spend more than 200 a night less is better. Mostly want clean hotel or motel. I'll be back when I have more questions, unless you all have more ideas for us
Thank you again

cleo, look at the Inn at Northrup Station in Portland, the rooms are around , a little over $100 a night..
Inn At Northrup Station
www.northrupstation.com
Also look into the downtown Embassy Suites and Marriott..
At the Coast, you will have to work a little on finding something in your price range that doesn't have minimum stays...The couple of hotels that I know are over $200 a night..
Good luck!

It would be good to stay in the Ashland/Medford or Klamath Falls area the night before your drive to Reno which would break it up. Ashland to Reno is 292 miles. Even Grants Pass (Rogue River) is just 332. Both regions would make for a much easier dive to Reno, than from the OR coast.
