fishee, I can only say that I would not rent a place where the sleeping arrangements are a "twin day bed" (this sounds like sleeping torture to me) and a double futon (if the day bed is torture, the futon is pure hell).
The price sounds good, but even nice hotels should have incredible bargains in November -- perhaps the lowest price month of the year in the Keys.
While I like to go for apartments for more space, this really doesn't seem any larger (and probably more cramped) than a typical motel room. Since there is no bed, you must make up the futon and day bed each night and try to get around them without cracking your shins.

thanks for your input! so you're thinking real bed, huh? This is for my boyfriend and myself -- I guess it's true we're taking a risk on bed comfort. I don't always mind futons but it depends on the thickness.

We need some kind of kitchen for breakfast (and hopefully to cook fish) which is why I'm looking at apt's. There was a 1 Br that was offered for $400 total (that had a real bed). What do you think of this one?

God the first place looks tiny. You could touch one wall while touching the other. I guess if you are not spending that much time in the room, who cares. I would ask the owners what the neighbors are like - noisy, another rental, empty, you get the idea.
The 2nd place is hard to tell but you gotta love a place that list Toilet Paper under Amenities! lol!

Well, I personally like the second one much better -- especially a real bed in addition to what is probably a fairly comfortable sofa to sit on.

Take a look at opsuites.com This may be a more consistent product. Check to see if the condos you mention are under construction. I recall that one of them had a project to remove and replace the balconies. Not a happy thing for vacation destination!
If you get tired of cooking fish, take it to Ballyhoo's. They will cook it for about $9.00 pp which gives you salad, sides and someone else to do the dishes!

Not only will a lot of places "cook your catch" but many B&B's and small motels/hotels will have a bbq for the guests to use.

neo, I think that road in the picture might be the view from their balcony, can't guess why else it would be there. the complex doesn't look too bad...

We're trying to save our money for the charters ($700/8 hrs) so these cheap lodgings help lower our costs. thanks everyone, noname, etc.!

Sorry, one more question if anyone's out there...

The larger 1 Br Seagulls unit is actually edge of Key Largo if it's mile marker 90 -- is that correct? Is there a benefit to staying in Islamorada instead?

I think you would be happier staying closer to Islamorada. Key Largo is a bit more spread out and in my opinion a little dull on the night life if that is important to you. More places to eat etc in Islamorada.
Last time I stayed in Key Largo (had a free night at the Westin) we wished we were back in Islamorada.

MM90 is much closer to Islamorada than Key Largo. If the price is right, then the location is fine. You will be close to Tavernier Towne, which has the Winn=Dixie. Be sure to get a shopper card from W-D. It is free and has great savings. The Westin (now Sheraton) is at MM 97, which is much farther from Islamorada. Islamorada starts at MM88 or so.

Does anyone know how much a tandem kayak or canoe rental generally runs?

We're considering a specific rental partially because it allows us to use their tandem kayak for free...

Here is kayak rental information. http://www.kayakfloridakeys.com/ This is in Key Largo. You can also rent kayaks at Robbie's in Islamorada but they didn't have rates on-line.

If you want cheap, check out The Key Lantern Motel in Islamorada.

Cheap, cheap, cheap and clean but no pool and isn't oceanfront.

Its best amenity is The Lorelei out back.
