When I read a description of a rental apartment in Paris and it says "double bed", what is the size of the bed? About the size of a US queen or that of a standard US double, which is about 54 inches wide?

Hello Bob. This is an age-old question, just how big is big. I have found that emailing the hotel or apartment usually gets the results you need.

I am 'in the hunt' for an apartment in Paris that can fit my DH and myself. Hubby is 6'1" and I'm 5'10", so a US double bed will not do.

In my emails back and forth, I am finding double can mean 140, 160, or 180 cm wide. I have even seen a place advertising a "king", but come to find out it is only 140 cm (that's waaaay too small for us). Usually what we end up with is twin beds (which of course is also called king "sometimes&quot. Very confusing!

I know there are some sites that give exact dimensions, but I have found that asking the measurements usually is the best way to know for sure. Then measure your bed at home for comparison.

going by the beds in our favorite hotel, a double was a double ( US) and a king was 2 beds pushed together.
In the ParisPerfect apt, we had a Queen and it was the same size Queen as US Queens.
So if it says double, it is double, not queen.

My experience has been that a double is approximately the size of a traditional USA double bed and that seems to be what the majority of apartments have in them. When it's a queen-sized bed they generally state that. King-sized beds have been twin beds pushed together and made up as one bed. Agree that asking is always the best way to ensure that you have a bed that you can sleep comfortably in. Good luck on finding the larger beds, my experience is that they are few and far between and we always have to pay a slightly higher rate for those places, but of course, it's definitely worth it for a good nights sleep.

well bob, I'm 6'4" and my wife is 5'9" and the double is good for a cozy night of snuggling. If big beds are what you want I suugest the Italian cities. Or you pretty much have to pay up. Too many other things to use your $$ for in Paris.

I may end up at a hotel I have used before that has 2 singles. We know that is adequate. It also has a bathroom that was NOT walled off from the original room.

I have seen figures running like 140 cm. That is 55 inches; a US standard double is 54 inches.

My wife and I measure the same Ms. Kopp and her spouse, but with creaky joints and other problems that are age related.
\180 cm would be ok. That is about 5 feet, 10 inches.

Ugh! I hate creaky joints and they aren't even age related yet!

The other was at the location wliwl suggested. I haven't finished looking there yet. But several seem suitable.
Either multiple beds, or a said-to-be biggie.

One said a king, but I that always makes me wonder whose king they mean.
If Louis XIV, then I would fee ok.

The lover guy got a suggestion about a huge bed with a privacy canopy at a location in Versailles!!

I cannot dredge up from the archives, but it was so cleverly written that it was hilarious. Never once did the term Palace of Versailles appear, but the directions given in the post guided the fellow to an unmistakeable place!!!!
Those of us who have been there, knew exactly where it was even without reading the whole set of instructions.

There was even a suggestion to take along a power drill with screwdriver attachments suitable for undoing the bed from the floor so that it could be shoved out into a nearby big room that had several mirrors.
