obxgirl--yes, the professor was at William and Mary. He and his wife recently moved to Alexandria and we saw them there.
My husband got a master's degree at W & M and worked at the language house dorms in the mid 1970's.
I spent a year doing community organizing in southern VA/northern NC during the same time period (lived in Petersburg and Smithfield). Next trip we will re-visit some of those places and will also try to spend time in Richmond and Yorktown and visit some other favorite spots.
I am thinking we might try to find a house or apartment to rent for a week. Although we enjoy road trips it is also good to have a base and to be able to cook some of our own meals.

I might be repeating advice that others have given but here goes:
Cochon on 2nd is a great lunch or dinner spot that is located right down the sidewalk from Va Beer Company -- you could do a twofer!
In case no one has mentioned it, there are two Jamestowns and two Yorktowns - Jamestown Settlement is the state-managed re-creation and Jamestown Island is the national park (combined with a Virginia non-profit). Yowktown has the same. In Yorktown, I would choose the new museum, whose name I have forgotten but it's the sister to JT Settlement.
Shorty's Diner will be closer to the Lodge for breakfast.
Enjoy our town .. be prepared for anything when it comes to weather .
