Oakland Lodging Help Needed ASAP!

I'm leaving for Oakland tomorrow and was just informed the Ramada Inn I'm staying at 8471 Enterprise Hway, (Hway 880 & Heggenberger Road) is not a safe location. The following week I am staying at a Holdiay Inn at 500 Heggenberger Road.
I am very concerned now regarding my choice of lodging.
I am preferably looking for a motels within walking distance of the BART subway lines. I will be primarily going to both Pac Bell Park and Network Associate Coliseum. I will not have acess to a car.
Are the above hotels I'm staying at OK to walk to and from the BART subway station at the Coliseum stop?
Or can anyone recommend a more safer motel within walkin distance of the BART for under $100?
Thanks so much!!

I stayed at that Holiday Inn two years ago and did not feel safe at all. I also don't think you should be walking to the BART station because you would have to cross many busy highways. Oakland was not a place for me and I wouldn't stay there again!

There are Marriot and Courtyard hotels in downtown Oakland very close to the Bart station & safe. I don't know the prices.

I would not recommend that part of town unless you had a rental car. It is a dangerous part of Oakland and the crime rate is very high.

Like the previous poster suggested, The Marriott Downtown and the newly opened Courtyard Hotel(I think its also a Marriott) are better, offer more things to do and BART access to both the coliseum and San Francisco are excellent(Since DT Oakland is Barts nexus)

Prices vary but I think you can get a good deal at courtyard.

docpsb,

Why don't you stay in San Francisco. You can catch BART and it will take you to the Oakland (Network Associate) Coliseum.

I was born in Oakland. I wouldn't stay there on a bet. So far this year, they have already surpassed last year's murder rate, and it was very high. In general, it's a very bad area and seems to be getting worse.

Jerry Brown is the Mayor, so what do you expect? The Oakland Police Department has asked for help from the Alameda County Sheriff's Department as well as the California Highway Patrol.

You "do the math".

curious,
spare us the armchair analysis of Oakland's social problems.

Its obvious that you know nothing of the city of your birth.

You wouldnt stay ANYWHERE in Oakland on a bet-that would be your loss-not Oaklands.

Hegenberger is not terrible as Oakland goes - just not terrific. It is near the airport and the coliseum - but you certainly do NOT want to be walking to/from BART in that neighborhood. It is not an area I would consider unless I had a car.

To Curious,
Whether you recognise it or not, Jerry Brown has one of today's best political minds. Period. I personally wish he would run for US Senate so everyone could get a taste of his brilliance, but I happen to know his next foray will be a run for California Attorney General, replacing Bill Lockyer.

And FWIW, I also think you don't have much knowledge of Oakland and all of its
diverse 'hoods'.

If you want to walk to BART and will be going to SF and Oakland, I would suggest staying in Downtown Berkeley. Try the Shattuck Hotel. I do not know their rates, but it would be a good spot for you and very safe (and probably more fun too!)

My two cents. I don't think curious is that familiar with Oakland. I live in Alameda and frequent am in Oakland. Heggenberger is just a big heavily travelled road between the airport that is deserted and a not a good place to be at night; however, their are plenty of lovely places to stay including the very expensive Claremont.

Downtown Berkeley will provide you with everything you need + nightlife when you are not at a Baseball field.

I also like the idea of staying in Jack London Square. Very safe and plenty of nightlife as well.

Doc, if you use Priceline, these are the downtown Oakland hotels that you'll get:

At the 3 star level:
Marriott Oakland City Center

At the 2.5 star level:
Courtyard Downtown

I looked this info up at www.biddingfortravel.com. The Marriott recently went for a $60/night bid, and the Courtyard for $41.

Check it out.

Thanks to all of you for your very helpful responses! I went with the Shattuck (HoJo) Hotel in Berkeley for $89 a night for the fist leg of the tour 12th-17th. I figure for the 19-22nd I'll have some time when in San Francisco Oakland area to find another hotel if the Shattuck doesn't work out.
Thanks Again!!
