Oahu question
If we stay in the north and then plan on seeing Pearl Harbor in the AM on our last day before heading to the airport, what can we do with our luggage? Our plan is to use Pacific Wings since they have a great price from Honolulu to Lanai. Would the airport be able to take our luggage? What about our carryons? I am assuming it's not safe to keep them in our car.

With all due respect Ashley, I am having trouble offering you advice as you have been quite erradic considering your plans. Many have offered advice regarding Lanai from Maui and Hana and all of your possible travels.
I mean this in the nicest of ways, but it is tiresome to try to help a person who has been to the islands many times, when they keep changing the questions and schedules. You have enough expertise to answer many of your own questions, seeing as you have explored a great deal of these paradise islands.
You are going to have a fantastic time. You just seem to be trying too hard. Google. You are a brilliant woman and parent that has pulled of many wonderful adventures including fantastic Christmas trees. Trust your judgement.

We did the same thing a couple of years ago, and we just left everything locked in the car, the parking lot at the Arizona memorial seemed very secure. Heck, we even went on a short hike up a nearby ridge before we had to turn in the rental car, and just left everything in it except the camera/wallets.

The parking lot at USS Arizona Memorial Visitors Center is fairly safe. They have security guards & security cameras.
If you leave luggage in the car, then leave them in the trunk & do not open the trunk while you are there.
They also have a baggage check area at the Visitors Center where you can check your bags there for about $3 each.

There is no place to leave luggage (lockers or storage) at the Honolulu airport, unless you are able to check it in early for the flight (4 hours is usually the limit for that I believe).
You'll need to keep it all in the trunk of your rental car and hope for the best.

kealani!
i had the exact same response like 4 years ago when she was planning the famouse "christmas tree" trip and got the "cold shoulder" too after being helpful again and again (old screen name/ computer)!
obviously, she is a control freak who can't handle even the nicest worded criticism!
kealani thank YOU!

WOW! I have always enjoyed using the Fodorite board to get first hand experience/info on places to stay/things to do. I have not been to Lani or Oahu, and have never spent the night in Hana. Therefore, I was hoping to get useful info in the planning of our trip to those islands. I think most people who post on these boards enjoy planning their trips (yes, with details) to make sure their trip is the best it can be.
I am sorry to see that this board has become less "user" friendly.
Where is the aloha spirit anyway?

I didn't realize that Pearl Harbor had a baggage holding area....if so, $3 per bag is a deal! Better to keep your peace of mind than risk having your trunk broken into.
I re-read Kealalani's post a couple of times, I don't think she was devoid of aloha spirit. She was complimenting you quite a bit....I think she was saying that since you are so smart, you can trust your gut in planning the trip without second guessing yourself?

Pearl Harbor USED to have a luggage storage but now it's just for very small bags. They changed it after 9/11. As a matter of fact, while writing this, I decided to check out their website. Here's what it says:
Security & Storage of Bags:
No bags or purses are allowed within the visitor center. Visitors can bring wallets, cell phones, camcorder, and cameras, but NO camera bags, backpacks, diaper bags, luggage and/or other items that offer concealment. A storage container is available for visitors coming to the USS Arizona Memorial, USS Bowfin Submarine & Park and the Battleship Missouri. The storage container can be found in the rear of the white tent located in the parking lot. The storage locker is in operation daily from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Items accepted must be smaller than 30”H x 30”W x 18” D; suitcases are not accepted. The fee is $2.00 per item. (The white tent will no longer be there after May, 2007)

We went to Waikiki on our last day in HI. We stopped at the airport first and checked in our bags [around 11 am for a 7 pm flight on AA] and returned our rental car. We each had 1 carry-on that we kept with us. We took a bus into town.
Not sure if this will work for you. As this is an interisland flight, maybe you could pack as much of your stuff in checked bags, leaving you little to carry on. I think I would feel safe with just carry on in trunk of car at Pearl Harbor. From TTess' post, it seems like your carryon can be checked - though not sure what it meant that white tent won't be there. Does that mean no more checking available? I can't imagine that to be the case. They know that folks come carrying stuff and if they won't let them carry it in, they have to have a check place to leave items.
As Pacific Wings seems like such a small airline, I would call them direct and ask how early can you check in your luggage for the flight you are interested in.
Hope this helps...

well I didn't think I was being particularly helpful. It's no state secret that there's no luggage storage at Honolulu airport.
