We will be in NYC the middle of June for a week and wondered how hot it might be. I realize this changes from year to year, but someone told me that it actually gets quite cool at night. I'm anticipating low 80's during the day. Is this about right? What about night - light jacket??
Also, part of the time we will be staying in the Upper West Side and would love a restaurant recommendation for a not TOO pricey place to eat. Is there such a thing? I keep reading about various places, but then everyone says, they're not worth the money. What is, if we're not real big eaters. I don't want a huge 5 course meal. Thanks.

The weather is likely to be in the 70s or 80s....or both!
Where on the Upper West Side? Anywhere from the 60s on up could be considered that area.

Hi, As a life long UWS NYC person, here are my favorite haunts: Cafe Luxemborg 70th & Amsterdam (bistro, steak frites, etc... it has been there since I was a kid, always great), Nice Matin 79th & Amsterdam (Bistro, 1-2 years old, ate there last night), Ouest B'way (American High End 84th & B'way, 4 years there), Aix (French 87th B'way, 1 year there)... if I had to pick one, it would between Luxemborg (more classic) and Nice Matin.

The jacket thing could go either way, I would guess the night low would bottom out at 60 at the coldest.

The upper west side is home to dozens and dozens of small ethnic restaruants that have both excellent food and reasonable prices. Check out menupages.com - or reply with a neighborhood and some cuisines and people will make specific recos.

Your best bet (and what I always do) is to check www.weather.com for the 10-day forecast just before leaving home to finalize your packing. Even so, be prepared for a bit warmer or a bit cooler and unexpected showers.

Generally, it cools down when the sun sets, but not always.

Be advised that no matter how hot it is during the day, when you go inside, many places are quite chilly with the A/C going full blast, so I always drag a sweater along.

Same goes for the theaters - many are quite chilly.

The Upper West Side is quite expansive. You may want to go to www.newyork.citysearch.com, do a search for your hotel, then, under "What's Nearby", click on Restaurants. There are lots of wonderful moderately priced restaurants.

There are tons of restaurants on the Upper West Side -- really, you can just take a stroll and look at the menus posted on the windows. The variety is, well, what one would expect in New York. Everything from French (as mentioned above) to Thai, to Chinese, to Italian, to Japanese, to Greek, to Mexican, to American, and more.

As for the weather, June is one of the most pleasant months to visit New York. It won't get too hot during the day, and it's usually mild at night. Last year, though, it rained for the first half of the month, so you never know.

I second the recommendation for Nice Matin if you like French. It is at the corner of 79th and Amsterdam. We just got back from a stay at the Lucerne right next door and enjoyed Nice Matin on several occasions. Try the blood orange martini - it became a daily ritual for us. Isabella's on Columbus and 77th was great too, as was our breakfast at Sarabeth's - Amsterdam and 80th. We loved our choice of staying in the Upper West Side. Hope you do too!
