NYC Theatre recommendations
Hello,
Can anyone comment on these shows, or recommend others for 4 adults? We are traveling in a couple of weeks, and I realize the hottest shows (Wicked, Spamalot) are not available. We would like to see 2-3 shows: musical, play (prefer comedy), and/or an off-Broadway. Here's a list of ideas we have so far:
* The Producers (is this still good without the original leads)?
* Movin' Out (love Billy Joel music, but is the story good? Loved Mamma Mia by the way).
* The Pillowman - anyone seen this yet?
* The BlueMan Group
* I Love You, You're Perfect...
* Awesome 80's Prom
Other ideas? Have seen Stomp, Rent, Mamma Mia, Chicago, and Phantom.
Thanks!

Yes the Producers is still good.
Hairspray is fantasically delightful & gets the best word of mouth in the WSJ's Zagat theatre survey week to week.
I highly recommend All Shook Up which I saw in previews. Unless you really hate Elvis. It is a show built around Elvis songs - and Twelfth Night - and it's pure entertainment.

I know I must be in the minority, but I thought The Producers was just OK. I really didn't see what the hype was all about. I did not see original cast, maybe that had something to do with it.
The Blue Man Group in NY is definitly worth seeing - I loved it. (The travelling version, however, is nothing like it).

My husband and I enjoyed Producers! We are also trying to get tix for Blue Man Group at Astor Theater, I hear its a GREAT time. Also, check out www.craigslist.com sometimes people sell their theater tickets, just go to the NYC link and then the tickets link. Good luck!

I saw Movin' Out and if you like the music of Billy Joel, you will like this show. Blue Man Group is a must see.. very entertaining and not too expensive. You can also find many discount theater tickets at www.workingadvantage.com. They offer discount tickets for specific dates for most of the big Broadway shows.

Loved the Producers. Liked Rent- but it isn't a happy go lucky story! Loved Chicago- it is nothing like the movie it has a lot of funny parts. The music just makes you want to move.I've seen it twice and would go a third time. Movin Out was good but I'm not a huge Billy Joel fan. Can't wait to see Wicked some time. Blue Man Group is a feast for the senses. I'm jealous Oh what problems you have deciding!! Have a ball.

I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change is more a review than a regular show, but one of the most delightful reviews ever. With tickets being much less than the Broadway shows, it is a good bargain as well.
The Producers is a very good show, so long as you get all the "in jokes" particularly the theatrical ones, like all the shows and other numerous musical numbers they are spoofing. I would think people who aren't major theatre goers might miss much of the fun of the show.

Actually, my wife and I are not regular theatre goers - well, mostly because we live in Memphis and the choices are pretty limited. My wife has been more than I have as her home town had more available. Still, we both thought the Producers was very funny and enjoyed it very much.

That's great Clifton, and now that I re-read my response, I'm afraid it might sound like I meant "non theatre goers" might not enjoy it. I didn't really mean that, but was trying to explain some of the repeated posts here from people who just thought it wasn't THAT funny.
It is funny and enjoyable on many levels, but once you realize that "Old Lady Land" is a direct spoof of "Loveland" from Follies, and the opening number is filled with direct references and spoofs of the opening number of "Fiddler on the Roof", just as a couple of examples, it becomes even funnier.

We saw Hairspray with the original cast and loved it. Tickets are much easier to come by these days. We saw the Producers (half price tickets from TKTS) and thought it was quite good. Had planned to see Movin Out (available at TKTS while we were there) but a snowstorm changed our plans a bit. If you are a fan of dancing, Movin Out is supposed to be great. Check Playbill.com for discounts--it's free to sign up and you can save some $$ without standing out in the cold.

Stop by the boxoffice for 700 Sundays, a one man show by Billy Crystal.....really wonderful. Sold out but they sometimes release company seats. Same with Spamelot, ask if any seats are being released routinely...but beware, obstructed view is full price and you miss a bit of the show.

I see what you mean Patrick, I had no idea where Old Lady Land came from, but did get the Fiddler on the Roof reference. I guess I wouldn't have known I'd missed a inside joke for sure unless someone pointed it out. Still, I always liked the movie, so I had a head start and my wife went more often back in Melbourne

Hey JMN
I've seen The Pillowman and just loved it.
I think Jeff Goldblum give one of his best performances in this play.
Also I managed to get good seats for only 65$ per ticket trough www.broadwaybox.com so you might want to try them as well.
Enjoy

We saw Producers, Mama Mia and Chicago. I liked all 3 but I think Producers is a sure bet for 4 people with varied tastes. I'd also recommend Avenue Q which is fun, unique, and an off broadway play. It's gotten rave, rave reviews from critics and audiences alike.

I just saw Good Vibrations yesterday... you guessed it... it's a Beach Boys musical. It's gotten mixed reviews, but it's two full hours of great singing and dancing. Kinda like Abba was for Mamma Mia. It'd be another option to look into if you like their music.
