I really want to see Spamalot, but if I can't get tix, what other shows do you recommend? I want to see something funny. My taste is generally not for the family fare type of stuff; I'd prefer something quirky, edgy or dark over sweet, heart-warming and cute.

Also, any tips on how/where I can get Spamalot tickets this summer?

We just saw The Pillowman, a straight play that stars Jeff Goldblum and Billy Crudup - DEFINITELY dark and edgy (but funny as well) and a very well acted show.

Have you tried for Spamalot tickets? Last week, they had mid-week tickets for mid-August available.

As far as musicals go, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is funny - loved the show. Not quirky or dark but considering it's about con men, I wouldn't call it heart warming either. Norbert Leo Butz is fantastic in the show-good chance he'll win the Best Actor Tony this year. Also enjoyed John Lithgow's performance.

HowardR: I will be in NYC in early July, so unless I get lucky somehow, no Spamalot tix available. Any change TKTS stand would have any? I'm traveling solo, so only need 1 ticket.

You might like Shockheaded Peter - witty, strange and very dark - quirky.

Shockheaded Peter is closing early this month. I just called for tickets last night for first week of June and found it will be closed by then. Darn -- I missed it in London too!

What about Doubt? I got tickets for that and also Pillowman, as well as Spamalot, After the Night and Music (new play by Elaine May with what should be a great cast) and A Light in the Piazza. Waiting for some discount offers on other shows.

TKTS won't have Spamalot. Depending on how much time you have to devote to standing in line at the theater, you might try for return/cancellation, or else try for standing room. There was an earlier thread that talked about the logistics of all that (search for Spamalot and you should find it.) You might get lucky only needing 1 seat -- I've done that and have gotten a ticket when singles became available and everybody in line ahead of me was looking for a pair of seats. Good luck!

Hmmm. It's getting late and I see my first sentence above could be read two different ways -- I didn't mean Shockheaded Peter is closing "early this month" -- I meant it's closing early ------- this month, earlier than originally scheduled -- I believe at the end of May.

Forget any discount tickets anywhere for Spamalot for a long, long time!
As a previous poster wrote, there's always the chance for a single if you're either very lucky and/or willing to spend time waiting at the theater for a cancellation.
Yes, Patrick, Shockheaded Peter closes May 29. Fortunately, we have tickets for the 22nd.

There are tons of Spamalot tickets available - it just depends on what you're willing to pay. Try e-bay first, on-line ticket brokers second.

Gekko - I was going to recommend All Shook Up but OP said she didn't want family fare type of stuff. All Shook Up is definitely a fun, feel good type of show.

We saw "All Shook Up" last Friday night and loved it. On Saturday night we saw "Turnandot" at the Met and loved that too. Aren't we well-rounded?

How are the balcony seats at the Shubert? I've found someone willing to sell a single ticket for Spamalot, but they are Center Balcony, row H (last row). Can anyone who has been there tell me if I will be able to see the show?

What about Ave. Q? I heard it is pretty dark and funny! Anyone seen it?

You'll be able to see from Row H in the balcony, but it is pretty far back! How much would the ticket cost?

HowardR: with FedEx, it's $140 for the ticket. Not sure what the face value of this ticket is, but I'm thinking its in the $80 range.

kiki and stormy: I have looked into Avenue Q also...sounds like I might enjoy it. Thinking about Wicked also.

I don't know if I'd pay $140 for the seat. It's a tough call. Why spend about $20 for Fed Ex?
As for other shows, I'd put Avenue Q at the top of the list. That should have been my original recommendation.
As for Wicked, I would hardly call it "quirky, edgy or dark." It's more "family fare type of stuff."
