Becca, you can get NYE packages at Foley Fish House at The Renaissance Hotel and The Broadway Bar at The Marriott Marquis.
Both will have outstanding views of the ball drop as neither is any higher than the 8th floor.
I would call both hotels and ask about the party package only. I think the MM is about $1500 a couple.

Thanks, GoTravel! That's a good idea! I suppose technically I would still be inside as opposed to out in the madness, but at least I wouldn't feel lonely about it with all the other people in the bar unlike if I was on the 30th floor of a hotel room with just my husband! And of course, there are definite benefits to being inside with food, drink, warmth and restrooms!

Lots of good suggestions here! I've taken out-of-town guests to Times Square for NYE (pre-2001) and I'm so glad we did (several times!). Yes, it'll be a bit of a pain, but since you know what you're getting into, plan well & have a blast. I second the Sofitel on 44th Street. My husband & I stay in their Philly hotel, which we love. Also, across the street from the Sofitel is Ian Schrager's Royalton. (We got engaged in their lounge.) It's dark and bizarre, but we like it there. Sometimes we treat ourselves to a stay even though we live in NYC.

Thanks Martrese! I know you went to Times Square pre-2001, but did you still have the same lack of restroom/food/drink issues? What did you do? Also, what time did you get down there to get a good spot?

It's a whole different game now, Becca. One year we got tickets to a Broadway show, which finished a little after 10:00 (a good strategy if you don't want to hang around Times Square for nine hours). Our tickets got us into the area at showtime and we were right in the thick of things just before midnight. Other years we had a late dinner at one of my then-favorite Chinese restaurants (West Side Cottage II on Ninth Avenue) and simply wandered over to Seventh Ave. around 10:00. You can't do that now, though. You may do well to create another post specifically asking for NYE Times Square tips with all the added security.

Thanks again, Martrese! I did post a few months ago on this topic, but with a couple of exceptions, all everyone did was tell me how insane I was for wanting to do that and tried to talk me out of it. I appreciate the warnings, but no one could understand that this is something I have always wanted to do and I'm going to do it no matter what they say!
Maybe I'll try again with another post and hopefully get better luck this time.

Better luck on what? Are we now reopening what is the best luxury hotel for viewing the ball drop on NYE? Or? The nicest hotels right in Times Square are-
Marriot Marquis
Doubletree Suites TS
Renaissance
Near but not in,
Sofitel
Bryant Park (trendy)
The London NYC is within a walk of Times Square and has some awesome views of Central Park (where there is fireworks at midnight)
This gives you all the info on NYE and lists hotels and restaurants with view of ball

No, you misread it! I have received excellent advice on hotels, and I sincerely appreciate it. Seriously. Martrese suggested that I post regarding New Year's Eve in Times Square. I responded to her that I had tried posting on that topic before and all I had received were people trying to disuade me - they ignored the fact that I was going whether they agreed with that or not. I then told Martrese that maybe I would try posting again - on the subject of New Year's Eve Times Square (not the hotels). The hotels response has been wonderful!

For past 5 years we have stayed at Marriott Marquis for three nights including the NYE and spent the NYE at a party on the 8th floor of the Hotel.
It is a nice party with open bar, dancing, and entertainment @$600./person. You can watch the ball drop and you have the view of the whole Times Square with all those people. This way you don't need to have a room facing the Times Square. I really think it is the best way to see the ball drop in NYC.
