Chambers Street.
Just ask the friendly neighborhood Bus operator
where to get off the bus. Please thank the bus operator for being there. The MTA did not get enough recognition after WTC. Subways and buses NEVER stopped running. They were subjected to many detours and such but never ever stopped running. Not one customer was injured or killed and there was considereable damage to various train stations and there are at least three bus lines that stop right in the vicinity of WTC.
Have a great trip!

Oh boy... take the subway instead of the bus!~~ The traffic through midtown (42nd street) makes it a horrendous, long, painful bus ride. If you'd rather take the bus, try and catch it below 32nd Street or you'll be riding for hours. To take the subway, hop on the 1/9/2/3 at 59th Street and get off at Chambers, Cortlandt. (They should be re-opened by 9/10) Or the 4/5/6 to Wall Street. You'll be able to walk around the area to the WTC site and pay your respects that way. The bus will not be worth the trip!
And ditto the comment about thanking the bus/subway folks.

The trip would be at least 30 minutes faster by subway. Subweay is the way to go if you don't mind using the subway. If you decide on the subway walk to 59th and BRoadway. Take a #1 or #2 train DOWNTOWN and get off at Park Place - the stop after CHambers. Walk to Liberty STreet on Broadway and make a right and follow the crowds to the area where you can view the site. AS you walk along Broadway you will pass the church in front of which the memorials are located and this should not be missed.

We were in New York for the first time a few weeks ago and took the subway and the buses all over town. The subways were fine....not a problem at all.
But I agree with what you are saying about looking out the window of the buses. We really enjoyed 'seeing' as much of New YOrk as we could and and didn't mind how long the bus trips took. Enjoy your trip.

I'm very appreciative of this thread. Everyone has been helpful and courteous. I was afraid I wrote a thing or two that might get blasted, and to my surprise and delight, that's not happened. I am very much looking forward to my trip and seeing New York City for the first time since spring 2001. kk

If you should decide on taking the subway get on the second or third car of the train. When you get off the train you will be near an escalator that will take you to the turnstile level. You will then walk up a staircase and you exit onto Broadway. Make a right, continue on Broadway and you will reach the church mentioned in my previous post. When you get to Fulton St. make a right and walk one block to Church St. Make as left onto Church. Walk to Liberty ST. and make a right - you will then have an open view into the WTC site.
