Don;t understand the question. Are you looking for a place to stay until you can rent an apartment? For that I would not do a hotel - but either do a sublet (craiglist.com) or a studio in one of the corporate rental apartment buidings.
For dinner - what do you want? You can go to a coffee shop and get a turkey sandwich and soda for $12/$13 with tax and tip. Or you can go to an upcale restaurant and pay $200 with a nice wine. Or anything in between. For a basic dinner in a neighborhood (not midtown) restaurant (salad, pasta and a glass of wine) I would allow about $30 or so. But if you're moving here wouldn't you be cooking in your apartment - eating every meal out would get VERY expensive.

You are really confusing me. How can you ask what is an acceptable amount to pay for a room and for dinner? Some people think nothing of $1000 a night for a nice suite, or $1000 for a really fine dinner with great wines. Is that what you're looking for? You're the one who must determine what price is acceptable to you -- none of us are looking at your bank book.
On another thread you asked sort of the same question but mentioned something about $100 to $125 a night for a hotel. If that's the case, drop "hot" out of your request right away, unless you mean a "hot pillow" pad. That budget in NYC will barely get you anything that most most people would be willing to close both eyes in, yet alone sleep in. Certainly you're not going to find the lastest "hot" hotel in that category!

If you need a place to stay while you look for an apartment, you can consider the de Hirsch residence at the 92nd St Y - a safe area, and good security, communal kitchen so you can cook some of your meals, and it averages about $ 70 a night, but I believe they still have their 30 day minimum stay - my daughter stayed there when she first moved to the city. There are similar places, some for male/female only - de Hirsch is for both - and the 92nd st Y is an active place to be - also has a gym, etc -
be more specific about what you are looking for, for how long, and people can be of more help.
