Bonnie you can't be too old if you're reading Playgirl!!!
Sexiest men in news, ok I can see why Sean Hannity would make that list. Not a whole thought of heart throbs in that business! The women in news though that's another story, they all look like a Stepford Wives parade!

No, no, no, Viamar! I don't read "Playgirl" ........ Alan Colmes was teasing Hannity about it on "Hannity & Colmes".......

earlier post was meant to be sarcastic, if it wasn't obvious...

if you're looking for upsides of coming during convention, they are cleaning up the city - repaving all the roads in midtown, etc. - so it will be sparkingly clean (at least by NY standards)

Now that the administration is working on plans to cancel/postpone the election, will they even need a convention? Maybe it will be canceled too and you won't have anything to worry about.

Well, you'll be in NYC at a fascinating time. I will never forget being in DC when Nixon resigned. There were protesters and it was wild. Went with my parents, think I was about 14 - 1974 - and it was very hot. Was a Democart then and remain one to this day. Have a great time. Should be some great people watching. NYC is wonderful anytime of year and whatever the circumstances.
Enjoy,

Kathy in tennessee

If you're a politically active Republican, I guess you'll be in the right place. Personally, I'd rather be malled by a bear than be in New York at that time!

Have a good time regardless!

WOW!

Thanks to all for the input. You guys are great.

I have moved our trip a bit later in September. All the same arrangements just 2 weeks later.

Even got tickets for Wicked. Guess I'll put my 3 for Sept 1. on EBAY or Craigslist.

(man74 the convention is the week starting Aug 30)

Thanks to all again. Can't wait to see NYC!

Elle,
If you are going to report rumor as fact, then at least check your sources.

Fact: Martial Law is something this country has had the ability to do since day 1.

Fact: Had it not been for Lincoln declaring martial law in 1861, we might not have a country.

Fact: Having a contingency plan in place is called being PRUDENT.

Ask yourself this, what happens if a terrorist explodes a bomb in a city like NY or San Francisco the day before the election. Certainly, the ability for voters to get to the polling places may be impacted. You think that helps or hurts Bush in the election to push it back a week if city like NY or SF is disrupted?

Look, I'm no fan of Bush and don't plan on voting for him. But, to NOT plan for a contingency is simply dereliction of responsibility.

A contingency plan tells the terrorists they have us by the b___s. It is no different than caving into hostage takers. Changing an election date would also lead to the party in power at the time changing the date of voting to serve their own purposes and giving out a lame excuse to change it.

I will vote on election day and will not be intimidated by any terrorist or CIA misinformation that is thrown at me.

Um... I live in NJ, and am planning to hide from NYC until the whole mess is over. They predict a nightmare, and I think that is the best case scenario. Yes, at the very least, I would stay uptown - very uptown - and even avoid Time Square, if possible. Good luck!

Just some food for thought: but aren't you "supposed" to have a convention in a "swing" state? What's the point of rallying support in a state that you "own" politically? That's why I don't get why the DemCon is in Boston. Why campaign for people in an area that are already likely to vote for you? I think the Reps scheduling the Convention for NYC is a politically motivated move to convert people who are still unsure.

Simone, as a politically reality, Bush hasn't got a proverbial snowball's chance in hell of winning New York state in the November election.

HowardR: really? I don't know.... Mind you, I'm not a die-hard Dubya, but I know a lot of people who seem to be ok with voting for him around here, and I live in California. wink-wink. Honestly, when it comes to politics, I never want to say never.... wink-wink. Plus, I think the Republicans are also campaigning for the House & Senate seats that might be up for grabs, as a consolation prize if Dubya loses.

I don't think having the convention in a particular state equates to "campaigning" to win that state. The Dems are in Boston,MA because Teddy wanted it that way. Boston residents sure didn't want it! I don't know what makes a particular city more desirable than another for a convention.... good question to research!

well, we do have consensus on one thing -- seems like dems and republicans like to travel about equally!

Come on, guys! There's been slap after slap at the Republicans on this thread, with no rebuttal ... not because there aren't Republicans on here but because this is not a political forum, and the political sniping is better done somewhere else. Both parties have their warts, and I'm not thrilled with the top brass on either side. (Bill Maher has a great saying on the subject, not to be repeated here.) I consider myself to be an Independent, but I know lots of lovely Republicans...... and really nice Dems. This is not the place, IMHO...

Bonnie,

I am an independent...it was meant to be a joke. It could have applied to any political convention in general. Since when did Fodor's become the Politically Correct club? You, as a fan of Bill Maher, should realize that a harmless snipe here or there is not meant to be taken personally.
