Try changing to somewhere on the upper west side. In travelling to and from the theater district, you won't have to go anywhere's near MSG. The UWS is a nice, mostly residential area near central park but away from the touristy crowds of times sq and the convention crowds near MSG.

I live in NYC and will be here because I have to, but I would not venture anywhere's near the convention site.

Hate to tell you ,Sarah, but the electoral college elects the President. Not the popular vote. Never has, never will.

Sarah, not to turn this into a political thread (well you made sure that wasn't going to happen, now didn't you) but you overestimate NYs political affiliation. The last two mayoral administrations have been Republican and Wall Street/The Banking Industry are major backers of then Republican Party.

Again, now that you threw down the guantlet let me say - What has ruined this country are those who first describe themselves as Liberals/Conservatives. They are so myopic in their viewpoint and so convinced they are morally/spiritually/ethically correct, they are blind to the fact that sometimes they aren't. Frankly, what this country needs are more AMERICANS and fewer "Liberals/Conservatives."

I'm in the same boat as you...we got tickets to Avenue Q for the matinee on Sept 1, not knowing the convention was there....so to make the best of it...I just bought tickets to Wicked for Thursday! Already had the airline/hotel booked (Clairmont on Fifth) so figured what the heck...good luck!

I'm a NYer getting out of town (and I live no where near MSG). As others have noted, it isn't the number of people that will matter (in fact, the number of people leaving town probably outnumbers those coming in), but the security issues that are the problem. Therefore, I would definitely not stay near MSG. All trains - including subways - are going to be boarded and checked before they go to Penn Station. Thus getting to and from your hotel - whether by foot, car, or train -is going to be an ordeal. I did a quick travelocity search and there at least a few hotels that have availability, so changing may still be a possibility.

And let's not reduce this to some partisan debate about the 2000 election, ok? Can't we all just agree to concentrate on defeating Bush this time?

It will be interesting (regardless of political leaning) to see how the to hold the convention in a city where Bush is terribly unpopular plays out...

This post made be check the dates of the Repubs. convention and of course it turns out that's when I will be there. Fortunately will be staying on the east side and have no plans of going to the west side or anywhere near MSG. Just hope everyone is too busy at the convention or protesting to make it to the Metropolitan!!!

Vacationdreamer, I'm glad you don't want to turn this thread into a partisan debate. Referring to your comment:

"And let's not reduce this to some partisan debate about the 2000 election, ok? Can't we all just agree to concentrate on defeating Bush this time?"

Right.......

mitdoac, I've heard there will be an influx of "working girls" in town for the convention. Perhaps you could find one of these women when you arrive and make a deal to let them use the apartment and make a handsome profit for yourself. Conventioneers probably like a easy location and a place which is not a hotel. Good luck.

Tim: I agree with Viamar.

You'll be in NYC for an historical event. I've been to several conventions (Demo, not Republican) and always had a great time despite the crowds. There is a special energy in the air and a special excitement to it all.

Just think, you'll have the country's leaders, celebrities, media types and a wide variety of protesters/dissenters all around you - it is a story you can tell for years, even with all the incovenience.

Go and send us trip reports!

I'm dreading it. It's bad enough with all the terror threats, but now the jackass protestors are going to make it more dangerous by tying up the police who already have their hands full. If possible, I won't come to work at all that week.

Sarah: You are so right - I guess I described NYC, convention, or not!

But I still think it would be interesting to be there in the midst of it all. I know a lot of people (like my hubby) think it would be awful but I always try to look on th bright side.

Anyway, isn't travel sometimes more fun when the unusual happens?

sure gualalisa and you don't know what to expect when something like is going on.

For me the biggest event to hit NYC that I can remember was the 50th anniversary of the united nations. I went down to get a coffee and their was a rutkas outside. The manager of the cafe across the street from my job said Yassar Arafat just walked down the street to the St. Regis. I saw him in a car the following day, a little man swallowed up by his turbin and the back seat. I did not get it was him until he passed.

End of the week, people told me that first Clinton and Blair had gone down after each other. People were just hanging out on Madison avenue waiting for the next dignitary to go down the street. All before 911 probably never see that kind of openness today.

No offense taken, Viamar!

But "Playgirl" magazine is running a poll on the sexiest men in news, and he was leading the pack, last I heard! But really, he's not so much my type...... Neil Cavuto is sorta cute; such a devilish glint, and who's that guy on Fox with the bleached hair, does the weekend morning show, sometimes the weekdays? He is a cutie! Good grief, I am too old for this!
