If you don't want a wait in midtown then you need to move further west over to 9th avenue where, as Philip stated, there are a ton of great places to eat fairly cheap. I happen to love Basilica which is on the east side of 9th ave around 48th street. They have a great pre theatre (arrive before 7?) dinner for 2 with a bottle of wine (salad, dessert, etc. etc. included) for around $20 per person. Most of the waits will be due to the theatre crowd. If you don't want to wait at all then eat a later dinner after 8PM.
Stay away from all crappy chain places! Remember- there are so many places to eat in Manhattan that most of us who live here just move on to the next place if there is too long of a wait. Only at Carmines in midtown would you ahve to wait an hour.

Amy, you haven't gotten much help in the 2 1/2 days since your posting because you didn't give us too much information! Like...how much do you want to spend and what type(s) of food do you prefer? There are literally hundreds of restaurants that fit your very broad requirements!
