nytraveler, I understand your apprehension of Newark. I'm from a metropolitan city and I wouldn't venture in to some areas. The area I stayed in last time was an area I will go back to every time if I can get in to this place. http://www.travellerspoint.com/accom...York-Homestay/
My daughter and I stayed here a week and found the trek in and back from NYC the best we've ever found.
In the past we've used buses, Path, trains, etc.
We've stayed in some nice hostels in NYC and the subway ride was longer than coming from this place in Jersey.
It's a brownstone in a neighborhood a couple blocks from the light rail. We felt safe all hours.
It's a two bedroom house so if the 2 couples could rent it they would have it all to themselves. We shared it one night with a mother/teen daughter coming into NYC for dance auditions. Latter in the week we shared it one night with a gentleman and his dog who had used it the last time they flew through town. The other 5 days we had the house to ourselves.
Newark can be scary, but I felt fine here. The rail station was clean and not full of rif-raf.

AJPeabody, I guess I was typing my rave of staying in Jersey for my NYC vacation and missed your post. I'm sorry to differ with your view of the Apple.
My light rail ticket was just over $2 with my military discount. It would set the normal public back $5. It took 20 minutes to arrive at NY Penn Station right in the heart of where most tourists are going. The rail ran directly up until 1:30am...but if I was enjoying the city that doesn't sleep, I would wait and catch the 4:30am train.

Not everyone that comes to NYC can afford to stay at the Ty Warner Penthouse at the Four Seasons. Those of us that can't, find ways to enjoy the city. I found that spending $5 for NJTransit, staying in New Jersey, and buying a Metro Card suited me just fine, thank you.

There are a zillion hotels - or pleasant hostels - in NYC. And I would ALWAYS go for lodging that is very central - but our vacation problem is not lack of money but limited time - so we spend more for convenience. Not the most expensive suite at the most expensive hotel - but a nice size deluxe room or suite at a 4* with all the services we want - but still shopping for the best price.

It all depends on what you value and what resources you have.

The problem with many lodgings in NJ is that they do not provide realistic info on getting to and fro the city in terms of either time or cost. I have seen hotels in Jersey claim they are only 2 miles from Times Square - but neglect to mention that is as the crow flies - but no known transit method - and the Hudson River is in between.
