NOLA - B&B, VRBO, Inn suggestions, please

We are going to New Orleans in early November. I have never been ; DH has been there a lot (his daughter is Tulane alum).

I have looked at the bigger hotels but would like a B&B or similar accomadations. I have also looked at VRBO. Thinking Garden district for area and we'd like to stay under $200 a night. We won't have a car, so access to trolley, bus etc or walking is important. Suggestions on other areas are ok, too. We don't want to stay IN The French Quarter.

I have searched here, but found mostly hotel suggestions. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks~

I wouldn't want to stay out on The River Road Plantation homes for more than a night or two, but several of them offer what you might be looking for. We stayed one night in Nottoway Plantation and enjoyed it and then the rest of our time in NO.

Sorry, now I read you won't have a car, so my suggestion is out.

We've stayed at the Chimes B & B in the past. The rooms were lovely, the breakfast delicious and the breakfast conversation was lively. http://www.chimesneworleans.com/

You might consider La Maison Marigny. It's on Bourbon Street, but on the very edge of the French Quarter next to Faubourg Marigny. I haven't stayed there but have heard wonderful reviews of it, and I spoke to one of the owners a few years ago when I was trying to plan a party in NO. He was very pleasant and very helpful. I think they close for a while during the summer, but am not sure exactly when.

A friend of mine stayed in a condo in May, and here are her suggestions:

I used vrbo.com, but the same condo is also listed on homeaway.com

airbnb.com has most of the same ones, too.

Tell him/her to make sure there are reviews online. And to google map the location to make sure the place actually exists. Also, call and speak directly to the owner before sending ANY money, and if anything at all feels hinky, not to do it.

I was relatively pleased... the location was totally terrific. And there was a well-equipped kitchen, and the beds were relatively comfy.
But it was up two flights of stairs (not the owner's fault, I just didn't realize it from the description and didn't ask) which made it hard with the kids.
It didn't turn out any cheaper than renting a bunch of hotel or b&b rooms.
And though the beds were comfy, the linens were really crap, and thinking about who was sleeping in there before us kinda skeezed me out.

I would recommend it for a bunch of college kids/partiers, though.

Have you looked at the Columns Hotel on St. Charles?

Granted - I have never stayed there, but it's right on the St. Charles street car line, in the heart of the Garden District, has a great front porch to sit and have drinks, and was the main filming local for "Pretty Baby."

I have also heard good things about

Prices at Columns are good but it gets very mixed reviews on TA. Apparently it's a pretty active bar and that can mean noise etc.

We like to stay at a B&B called Monrose Row. It is right outside the French Quarter, but walking distance to Frenchman St for the music, & the quarter the biggest bonus is Cindy the owner is wonderful, a great NOLA resource.
It is much nicer than a hotel and the breakfasts are great.

Even if you don't stay at Monrose Row, please visit the website. The home page is truly unique and very charming.

We stayed here several years ago and can't say enough about how much we loved both the B&B and the proprietors. Definitely plan to get back to NO one day and would stay here again.
