Newport, Rhode Island: last minute trip

My 16 year old son bought a ticket to see Guster at the Yaught Club in Newport tomorrow evening(did I spell that right? it looks funny . . . )with older friends who are old enough to drive the three hours it takes to get there, but whom I don't trust on some deep maternal level that has been turning my insides into knots. Anyway, my husband and I are driving him tomorrow (if he accepts the terms, otherwise he can't go), dropping him off, and picking him up. How could I make this fun for us!? Can anyone recommend a great place for dinner (it certainly doesn't have to be five star!), maybe on the water, a beach we could walk? Where are the movie theatres? Is there anywhere reasonable to stay? We might just drive back home. Thanks.

"Yacht". Anyway, have dinner at The Moorings. Unfortunately, at this time of year, prices are sky-high for accommodations. You don't say where you're coming from but perhaps it does make sense just to make it a day trip. There are several beaches in Newport and Ocean Drive is a pleasure. Instead of walking a beach, do the Cliff Walk.

If you put "Newport" in the search window, you'll get lots of great recommendations for restaurants. As far as reasonable hotels to stay at, you can try calling these #'s: 866-782-9678, and 800-804-5336. They are reservations services that have access the the availability of rooms and rates. It's worth a shot, and beats calling around, as it's tough to find a room around there under $150 night.

Well, I don't know how reasonable this place is in summer, but we LOVE the Francis Malbourne (sp)House located near the harbor. They have GREAT breakfasts and afternoon tea, and can't beat the location. They might have some last minute availability!
We had dinner at the Cheeky Monkey right near Francis Malbourne House
and it was fun atmosphere, but food was just "okay". Probably better to stick with one of the local seafood restaurants overlooking the harbor.
You should definitely do the CLIFF WALK along the ocean, with the view of mansions! Highly recommend it! Have fun!

The Red Parrot on Thames St. is great for a more casual dinner. The Cooke House is a great higher end place on the wharf. Scales and Shells is the best for seafood...they take cash only.

You'll find plenty to do while your son is at the concert, walk down Thames, do the Cliff Walk, tour mansions, you won't be bored.

Two on the water places are The Landing & Christies. They're casual dining, not great dining places, but might be ideal for lunch.

Assuming you are not spending the night.
There are many good/great places off Thames St on the waterfront. In addition to the ones names above, "The Candy Shoppe", 22 Bowen and The Black Pearl. If you want to be "away" from this area (and have to drive to), The Castle Hill Inn, White Horse Tavern (need a coat and tie), and for "funky" try the Salvation Cafe.
It should be warm enough for you to "roam the streets" and sit down on the waterfront somewhere. Great place to "kill time".
(THe Yacht Club is right on the water off Thames Street)

For ultra-casual fun, eat at Flo's Clam Shack on First Beach (Easton's Beach). Looks like a dive, but the atmosphere and food are great. I got married on the beach there last year, and we ate there for 4 night straight! I recommend the fish & chips and a pitcher of beer, then just enjoy the atmosphere (and proximity to the ocean).
