Newport, Rhode Island - Accommodations
We are planning a trip around Cape Cod in early June and would like to spend the night of June 7th in Newport, on our way back to Boston. Can anyone suggest a clean spot that doesn't cost $500/night - ouch we're from north of the border. We do not need to see the water, as I know that would increase price considerably. We just want to tour the town and see the Mansions, and sleep in a safe, inexpensive (probably a Newport oxymoron) spot. Any help would be most appreciated, as would info on what not to miss on our rounds. Thanks all!

If you want a bed and breakfast, try the Marshall Slocum Guest House. My husband and I stayed there recently and it did not break the bank. She has a web site. When I was researching Newport it was the cheapest place I could find!

We were just there a couple of weeks ago. Stayed at the Inn at Newport Beach--it's close to the Cliff walk and across from the beach--very convenient, really. We used a coupon from one of those books you pick up at the visitor's centers and the price was an unbelievable $59.95. Had a great extended continental breakfast in a nice room overlooking the beach. We were very pleased.

Try the Mill Street Inn (www.millstreetinn.com). They have standard rooms as well as duplexes, some with really terrific views of the harbor. We usually request room 212 as it's one of the largest duplexes they have and has a really nice private deck. Price in the summer is around $200 -- you may have a problem with the fact that you're only staying one night. Most inns and hotels require a two night minimum in the summer. Good luck!
