Newport News/Williamsburg/Hampton, VA
My daughter (a Captain in the Army) is being stationed at Fort Eustis, VA in Newport News. I've been in the area several times but never had to look for rental housing - anyone have personal experiences with it?

Hey Postal - Sorry about the delay. I was out of town and I wanted to speak to the people I work with.
Good apartment complexes: The Harbours, Springhouse, and Chesapeake Bay Apts., all on Jefferson in Newport News.
Stay away from: Lucas Creek apts., a lot of the complexes in Denbigh
If she would rather commute from Williamsburg, or rent a townhouse, or is interested in something in a gated communtity, let us know.
If she has her eye on something, we can let you know whether it is good.

Sorry, I should have mentioned she has to rent a house due to her 2 dogs and 3 cats (she IS a vet, after all!). Plus there's the horse we're keeing for her right now! So it's either a house with a fenced yard or even more property if possible!
She can spend about $1500 per month.
She already has some good leads but there's nothing like hearing from locals on this board!

Hi, Postal! We rented two properties up there, one in Yorktown (although the town used to be called Dandy before it was incorporated), and one in Newport News. The first one was on about 10 fenced acres on a creek, the second a townhouse in a nice community just down the road from the fort--I wish I could remember the name of it! Both were from listings we found in the newspaper, so I realize this isn't all that helpful, but I just wanted to say that there are tons of properties for rent in that area, many of them houses, so I am positive your daughter will find what she needs. There are stables in the area, too, so if she can't live with the horse, she may be able to board it nearby. Good luck, and please thank her for me for her service.

Thank you, Newbe, you gave her hope of finding some acreage. There are stables right on Ft. Eustis so that's always an option. Her horse is 25 so she wants her nearby in case there are problems.
My daughter is the last of the four of us (husband, son, me, and now her) to serve in the Army. My son spent a year in Iraq and got out after three years and now she's doing her thing. I'm so proud of both my kids and I will pass on your good wishes.
Yes, Birdie, she'll be the new vet at Fort Eustis. She has written to the current one for more info and that should be her best source of all. But like I said, there's just nothing like Fodorites for good info!

Wow, Postal, you have a lot to be proud of!
I finally recalled the name of the development we rented in: Colony Pines. And I dug up the company that managed the rental: http://www.century21nachman.com/
They're big in the area and had tons of listings at the time. Our property manager was Wayne Booth out of the Yorktown office-nice guy.
Unfortunately, we didn't get much help from the housing office on the fort, but you know how that goes!
Best of luck again!

Just wanted to let you know my daughter ended up with a wonderful rental in Poquoson, which I guess is actually Hampton based on the zip code. She liked that area a lot more than Newport News. Birdie, please keep in touch. My e-mail is [email protected]
