Yes, David Blaine gets paid to stand on the perch. I forget which network this time...not sure if he has a long term contract with them.
As for security. Shea Stadium was pretty lax on Friday and the security personnel were very friendly.
Yesterday, security at Hartford airport (BDL) was beefed up. State Troopers checking cars pulling in to the curb area.

I heard some of the commotion this morning on my way to work and, yes, it was quite disconcerting -- especially around the Empire State Building. How sad that the first things people did were either to look up at the building (as if saying "whew.. no plane") or to run like hell. As I understand, manhole covers "pop" pretty often here in the city though due to steam and other such things.

We got back Monday night (27th) from a 10 day trip to New York and other than perhaps a bit more security in evidence, had no problems and no worries doing all the good touristy stuff. Walked over the Brooklyn Bridge from Brooklyn to Manhatten (after great pizza at Grimaldi's under the bridge)on the Tuesday the bridge alert went out, and no problems for pedestrians whatsoever.
Museums, Empire State Building, etc were doing the usual cursory searches of my oversized handbag, but LaGuardia security seemed lighter than most other airports. There were lots of choppers and a blimp overhead for the Fleet Week boat procession up the Hudson. Ellis Island is open to visitors. Did see a lot of activity in Central Park last Saturday - two busloads plus 3 vehicles of national guardsmen, bunch of police cars, ambulance, bomb squad - near the Bethesda Fountain. Must have been a bomb threat of some sort. We still had our greatest NY trip ever, and many residents thanked us for visiting, including the dentist my husband had to make an emergency visit to.

As of this afternoon, when I got to the Empire State Building, everything had been reopened and cleaned up. The manhole covers blew all along 34th St. It was lucky no one was injured nor were any cars damaged.
Just gave people in the area jitters.
Was funny tonight that the news carried the story but neither Con Ed nor the Fire Dept was talking. Con Ed even had a spokesperson on site, guess right now everyone is keeping a bit of a lower profile.
Generally things are business as usual, and I agree that we all need to just be more aware of everything that is going on around us at all times. Never hurts to be safe.
