new york city theater district

Am planning a romantic 4-day first time trip to see a play in New York. Any suggestions as to a moderately priced hotel($250-300/night)near theater district. Would like to see a play (Lion King?), and see some other sights-ground zero, central park, statue of liberty, times square, etc. Would like to drive to city outskirts, park car and take public transport to hotel. Is that good idea, and if so, are there secure and reasonable lots adjacent to train or subway stations?

Around 47th/7th, we have stayed at, and liked, the Renaissance and the Doubletree Suites.

What time of year will you be coming?

Yes, it is possible to leave your car at a suburban train station and take the train into the city - assuming you will have only a little luggage. Where will you be coming from?

If you want romance, check out the Michelangelo and the Casablanca hotels in the Times Square area. The Sofitel is probably another great option. Ifyou register for free with playbill.com I think there's a special rate at the Sofitel. Look for it on the playbill website.

I personally wouldn't bother parking the car outside the city as you will then have to "schlepp" your bags. If the issue is cost, once you've figured out where you're staying, go to iconparking.com and find a good rate for a garage near the hotel. One of you get dropped off at the hotel with bags while the other goes to park the car. If you're concerned about driving....don't be but try to time your arrival into the city at an "off" time.
