Hi Dawn
Well, we stay all over the place in December and never really mind it. We use the subway or bus or walk. I think you'll be fine... this is all midtown so how far can it really be? Just wear comfortable shoes is my only advice.
I loved the Tenement Museum. I chose a tour based on my own family background and I was very moved and found it totally memorable. My friend who I was with is more of an All American woman, without close ties to an immigrant past, and I have to say that she didn't like it as much as I did.
I think your daughter will like it.

The Residence Inn doesn't"t have rooms with 2 beds, only 1 bed & sofabed. I don't think the execustays are well located for you nor are they that great. I repeat, my choices are all on Fifth ave or west of there for a theater trip. Whichever of the ones I listed have a room with 2 beds is what you want. The Courtyard on 3rd ave is just too far from the theaters.

mclaurie, I was just tossing out additional ideas because some of the Marriott properties didn't have rooms available for points. I agree with your suggestions - just trying to brainstorm other options in case the preferred ones are not available for MomDD's time frame.
HowardR made an excellent point to book something now before nothing is available.

You can walk to Times Square from the Courtyard in 20 minutes. I guess convenience is in the eye of the beholder, but you can also use tthe F or E train to get to the eastern or western ege of Times square, respectively, in about 5 minutes. I stand by my recommendation, though I admit that the Courtyard on 40th is more convenient to theaters. But I like the east side location better.

I don't want to belabor the point...but I will
Doug walking back from a show - as a resident and a man - is one thing.
Mom and her 14yo daughter is another.
If it's not a cold December, she'll be fine. I've been there when it's been 7 degrees - during the day. I also went on a Foods of NY tour that day -and very few people showed up because it was BITTER cold. Our corporate headquarters are in NJ so I had my "NJ coat" - a very heavy full length coat with all the accessories - that helped with the wind. I often stayed at the Hilton on 6th and walked it alone without any concerns. Maybe it's because I come from warmer climes. Maybe it's my imagination and the wind flowing down the streets like a wind tunnel is not stronger or colder that winds at home - although the winds sweeping down the plains where Mom now lives can be bitter cold.
As a woman, traveling with a 14 yo daughter, in DECEMBER, my PERSONAL preference would be to be heading back to a nearby hotel after a Broadway show is out. It's hell to try to catch a cab then. I've been approached by town car drivers (off duty) to negotiate a rate. I've walked from a Broadway show to the Grand Hyatt, in winter, with my mom - and it was the least favorite part of the trip. Actually, she hated it.
During spring or fall? Sure? Winter? Closer would be better for me. Mom will have to decide what works best for her.

Thanks so much everyone. I have not seen a lack of availability during the dates I am going - so that is good (every Marriott property is currently showing available for me to use points). Because there is a weather chance, and because my daughter really just wants to see two shows - we will go with one closer to the theater.
For what it is worth - I would prefer as well the east side better myself in my limited time in NYC (maybe 5 or 6 trips) but the weather, the theater and mainly the 14 year old daughter say that a closer location would be better.
Thank you all so much - onto shows!

mclaurie, that Residence Inn near Bryant Park most definitely has rooms with two beds, we stayed in one such this summer. I thought it was a great location but I wish I'd known the tip about the restaurant with the croissants-- seven days of the included breakfast at the marriott with the worst coffee I'd ever had was a bit much.

I would stay at the Marquis. I know it is crowded. You could wait a lifetime for an elevator but it is right there at the theaters. You could get a room with a great view. Excellent restaurants are close by. If younwant to explore the city the subway is one block away. Convenience counts.
The city in December is mobbed. It is already mobbed. Getting around is not easy. Just mho.

Elaine - I know - I promise I know... I have stayed there and I get what you are saying - I just need a TINY bit AWAY from the mob - It is not about exploring the city - I get highly overwhelmed RIGHT in the middle of it all. Like almost hives

MonicaRichards is right, there apparently are some 2 bedded rooms according to the website but they're probably not available for your dates. Moms, I'm assuming you got the Times Square South Courtyard. I think you'll have a great trip. Don't know what croissant place was mentioned but there's a Le Pain Quotidien on 40th st. just east of 6th ave. with good croissants and breakfast items. There's a crepe cart in Bryant Park but not sure what time it opens.

Wanted to say thank you on this thread for the information on NYC - we had a glorious time - it was perfect weather and the hotel was in an excellent location for wanting to see the theater and far enough out of time square for me not to get hives ;-)
We did go to Bryant park and I saw the crepes - was not a the right time for me to eat them but the entire trip was wonderful. I am pretty busy but hope to write a full trip report after the first of the year.
