Dear all,

My wife and I are planning a trip to US in June 2015. We only have about 14 days. We would love to just experience a slice of NYC before exploring the sights of New England by car. Both of us love landscape and nice architecture. Given the short time that we have, are there any suggestions as to what are some good places to see without rush. Appreciate any help.

Can you be more specific about what you mean by New England. That could be anything from the Maine coast to Berkshires.

Or another approach to narrowing down New England is to think about what you want to see - history, ocean, mountains, cities, rural. It will help determine an itinerary. Think about how much time you want to spend in Boston and how much time touring around. You will get more opinions here than you can process - that is almost guaranteed.

In addition to Boston, I would suggest Portsmouth NH (see Strawbery Banke) for nice architecture. It's about an hour north of Boston. If you do a loop west thru NH, you could visit and tour Canterbury Shaker Village.

If you're looking for landscape and architecture, in June, what about a tour through some of the smaller coastal cities. Here are some possibilities for you to look in to...

Mystic CT (restored seaport), and definitely
Newport, RI for the mansions and views. 2 nights

Cape Cod National Seashore -- stay in Chatham, Wellfleet, or Provincetown. 2 nights

Boston MA. 3 nights

Some combination of: Cape Anne, Portsmouth NH, Portland ME, or the area around Lake Winnepesaukie. 2 nights

This totals 9 nights, which gives you 5 nights in NYC.

As others have mentioned, New England is a big area and this itenerary ignores the inland scenery that you might prefer.

I don't think we will spend more than two days in NYC, hope to see more natural scenery than city. We love the ocean views as well as quaint towns.

You could drive from NYC up the Hudson valley to visit its various sites (Rockefeller estate, FDR home, Vanderbilt Mansion, Olana) on the way to Vermont, drive up Vt 100 through its picturesque villages and back down through New Hampshire to Old Sturbridge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Sturbridge_Village ) and Mystic Seaport (http://www.mysticseaport.org/ ) on the way back to NYC and home.
