Sorry if this is a common thread but I am fairly new to the site. I need a suggestions for three nights accommodation in New York in December. Budget is around $100 per room per night, in a central, safe area. Thank you.

Your best--and maybe only--option for $100/night rooms in NY (assuming you don't want a shared bathroom situation) is to try a discount site like hoteldiscounts.com or quickbook.com, or better yet, priceline.com (search here for priceline info; there are some threads with tips for bidding). Sorry, but $100 is pretty rock-bottom in NYC. Try looking into the low-cost chains like Comfort Inn and Quality. If you're willing to use a shared bath, say so and I can recommend some places. But do look into the discount sites, as you never know what you'll find at or near $100. And if you'll be here on a weekend, some of the large hotels near the World Trade Center have very low weekend specials.

Thanks. Hotel discounts came up with the Arlington on 25th and Broadway at $119 a night which sounds fairly good to me.

Sarah, in your budgeting, keep in mind that you have to pay tax on the room, which, I believe, is 13.5% plus $2 a night.

If you decide to go the shared bath route check out the Habitat (http://www.habitatny.com). Current rate for a single is $79 a night. With taxes total will be around $90. Good area - 57th Street and Lexington Ave.

The answer for me was priceline.com. Last month I stayed at the Waldorf Astoria for $140 a nite. That was a 4 star hotel, you may want to try a 3 star hotel for about $100 or so.

Sarah you'll have a wonderful time in NYC. My husband and 17 year old son stayed at Radio City Suites on 49th and 6th in Downtown Manhattan the last week of May through the middle of June 2001. They were right off Times Square, within walking distance of Broadway, Rockefeller Center, Central Station...a great location! A studio was $118 per night. It included a full kitchen which makes it easier than going out for every meal. Breakfast was in the room, etc. It included full maid service, etc. A wonderful place to stay. I booked it through my travel agent.

have stayed a few times at the Hampton Inn in Secaucus, New Jersey. You can hop a bus right across the street that takes you to Manhattan, and the rates are usually around 89. There are also several restaurants within walking distance of the hotel, so when you get back you can relax away from the NYC crowds!

We are staying at the Best Western Ambassador. We received a rate of $92.10, plus tax, for the night. The rates do go up beginning on Thursday's. Ask for the Manager's Special.

I've used some properties run by a group that offers rooms at or near your price range, found them to be great value for the money, with a feel rather like a European hotel, and breakfast was included. Rooms are immaculately clean, not large but not tiny either, furnished in a very cool and comfortable modern look, and friendly and efficient staff. Check them out at www.nycityhotels.com
