New Year's Day in Manhattan: what to do

What can we do in Midtown Manhattan on New Year's day if it is too cold or rainy to just walk around. The stores and museums will be closed, I think. Ideas?

Most of the major department stores will be open, probably not until 12 noon tho. See a show. Also, I think the museums may be open also. You should check.

Usually most of the movie theaters are open (but extremely crowded).

Department stores are definitely open, and probably some museums as well. Also, some Broadway shows mught be performing.

Have a long brunch and Bloody Mary's at The Blue Ribbon Bakery or The Cupping Room. Make sure you get the French Toast stuffed with cream cheese and nuts.

I was there last New Year's Day (assume you mean Jan. 1) and, to differ w/one poster, I don't think the dept. stores were open. However most of the small shops and stalls on Canal Street were.

New Year's Day 2003 falls on a Wednesday so definitely make plans to see a matinee or evening show.

New Yorkers are traditionally hungover or sleep late on New Year's Day and then they go to brunch and see a movie. You can purchase tickets ahead of time at the movie theaters or online. Don't know where you're from but some of the movie theaters here are really awesome with surround-sound and stadium seating/rocking type chairs. Very cool.
