The Marriott is nice, it has an indoor pool and it is centrally located. If you want a B&B, check the net for the Newport B&B association which runs a booking service.

What you can do for a day really depends on when you are going. In summer, the beach is nice as is a cocktail at the Inn at Castle Hill. The Mansion tours are popular as are strolls through the shops in the central part of town.

For a reasonable meal, the Brick Alley Pub is a popular choice.
