I also recommend taking a cajun cooking class (at least it puts you inside air conditioning for a couple hours in July & you get to taste some LA treats)!
Mr. B.'s was a good restaurant when I was there a few years ago - owned by a memeber of the family, Brennans, that own the famous Commander's Palace (and many other NOLA eateries).
Have to stop by Pat O'Briens! They had a sign-along in piano bar when we were there.

Those are some great suggestions! I live in New Orleans, and I'm ready to visit.
If you have the time (allow 1/2 day), take the street car from the Sheraton to City Park. I don't know what the current exhibit is at the New Orleans Museum of Art (at the end of the line), but it doesn't matter. When you exit the street car, turn to the right to see Bayou St. John and a lovely cemetery on every bus tour. If you go to the left, you are in City Park and can visit the dueling oaks, NOMA, and the new (free) Besthoff sculpture garden. Do a google for New Orleans City Park and you'll find their website.
Skip the dinner cruise. Far better vittles available on land.
My favorite restaurant is Commander's Palace in the Garden District, also accessible by street car (daytime only!) Weekend brunch is incredible!
Enjoy your trip and feel free to ask me any questions. Just got back from Las Vegas and everyone on this site was very helpful. Hope to return the favors!

Thanks for the information, trophywife!
We will be in New Orleans in early July and I was planning to take the new streetcar to the City Park. But I wasn't sure what was available to do when we arrived.
Thanks for the ideas! The cemetary and the Sculpture garden both sound very interesting.

As posted earlier in this thread, we went to the Cajun Cooking School in the River Walk Mall, which is a short walk from the French Quarter (10 mins) but we also saw cooking schools right in the French Quarter too. I liked our school because the lady who taught it was funny and made it very easy. We also got lots to eat! If you take classes at the Cajun Cooking School, you get a 10% discount on everything in the store the day you take the class. We bought everything from hot sauces to spoons and all of our souvenirs for our families. Pretty good deal!
