Two couples (50's/60's) heading to New Orleans for a long week end in September. Recommendations for great hotels. Warehouse district? Garden District? Would like to be walking distance to Bourbon Street and the Marketplace but not right in the middle of the craziness. Would love ideas of must sees!

Flying, driving or taking one of 3 different trains?
The last time I stayed in New Orleans (before Katrina) I stayed in a hostel room in the Garden District.
The Garden District is much quieter than the French Quarter.
Ride the St. Charles St. streetcar to get to Canal St. which is the edge of the French Quarter.

We stayed here a few years back. We thought it was a great location, just on the outskirts of the busiest part of French Quarter.

The Monteleone is really nice, out of our price range for our trip. Check there.

They have rooms that face Bourbon and those likely are loud . . they also have rooms that face the interior courtyard that are not

I stayed at the Omni Royal last year for a conference and you would never know you're in the middle of the Quarter. It was very quiet and also nice being in easy walking distance of restaurants, etc.

Just wanted to chime in about restaurants - we were there a month ago, and had a really good meal at Domenica, and a great meal and great time at R'evolution. I also hear Shaya (same owner/chef as Domenica) is fantastic, but we didn't make it.

Thanks for all your replies. We have looked at each and every one and they all seem like wonderful hotels. We were interested in the Omni (which we did see got TWO referrals) however, its rate is too high for the weekend we are traveling. We are thinking the Le Meridian right now. Rate is good, locations seems great.
I really appreciate the restaurant referrals. Will spend some time today checking them out. It has been a long long time since we have visited (long before Katrina) We will be celebrating my husbands birthday and he is a big cajun food lover...Commander??? Or should we do cajun for lunch and something fabulous for his bday dinner? Seafood would be wonderful and if there was steak option I think that would be great. Looking for something very nice, but not so nice he would have to wear a coat.

Commanders Palace is a pretty fabulous restuarant and would make a great birthday meal. Making reservations there is the first thing I do on every New Orleans trip! Lunch and dinner are pretty different, so look over the menu. I slightly prefer dinner but my favorites dishes are the shrimp and tasso Hennican appetizer and the strawberry shortcake (that biscuit is heaven!), so it's a toss up.

My favorite hotel in the French Quarter is the Dauphine Orleans. The hotel itself is fine, but if you want romantic rooms the Hermann House rooms are across the street around a private courtyard. VERY nice. Love that place.

It's also a few steps away from Deannie's (mentioned above).
Another great restaurant choice, Bayona, is literally next door and is fabulous (and romantic).

On the last visit, we stayed in the Garden District and loved it. Good restaurant choices and the FQ is a street car and/or Uber ride away. LOVED the WWII museum. Fantastic. Also love the sweet shop, Sucre, with fantastic macarons and gelato. Of course, Commander's Palace is there also. I love the relaxed vibe and restaurants walking down Magazine Street and the FQ is close enough for when you want to be there.

Fabulous shop with three generations working there. Go see if the French grandmere is working that day. Everyone is wonderful!

Starrs, we ate at Bayona both of our last two trips, and were disappointed. The food was very good, but nothing really special. R'evolution wowed us, nothing "wow" about Bayona.

You might want to take the Saints' schedule into account. They have three home games in September, but the two that could really affect hotel availablilty will be the 11th, when they play the Raiders, and the 26th, against the Falcons.

If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend watching the HBO series "Treme".
