New Orleans - where to stay - Downtown or French Quarter

Hi

Will be visiting New Orleans later in the year and trying to decide where to stay – will be in NO for 3 days mainly for sightseeing.

Tossing up between Omni Royal Orleans (French Quarter) or The Hyatt (downtown once re-opened).

Offered a great rate at the Hyatt however is this area safe during the day and night .. how easy is it to get to the French Quarter and around the rest of NO from this location.

Many thanks for your advice.

I'd stay in the French Quarter, which is one of the most heavily-policed areas in the country. For a tourist, it'd also be much more convenient.

Absolutely the French Quarter!
Our hotel of choice, for about 18 years now, has been the Ramada Inn on Bourbon. The Bourbon Street/Toulouse rooms can be loud at night, but for us to have a covered balcony and sit and watch the city is well worth it. If you don't want to deal with the noise, their courtyard facing rooms are wonderful. The hotel is centrally located in the Quarter, so having a car is unnecessary. Enjoy New Orleans!!

Me too - French Quarter. So much more the feel of the city for us. Rich's suggestions are great ones.

Another vote for the French Quarter....in fact I have been to New Orleans several times and the only time I even leave the French Quarter is to go to dinner at Jaques-Imos. I actually usally stay at the Omni. I love the location and the hotel. HAVE FUN...I'm jealous
