Going to a conference in New Orleans july 8-12 and staying three days after. What is weather like then? Conference is at the
sheraton New Orleans. Is it worth staying right there or finding a nearby hotel? What is it like?

I don't know where you are from, but July weather in New Orleans can practically take your breath away. The average high temperature in New Orleans is in the 90+ range and it is also the month with the most rainfall; nearly 7 inches, on average. In short, the place is inclined to be like a steam room.

It will be hot and humid, no doubt! You can still have fun, just be sure to drink lots of water while out touring and get inside in the AC whenever possible. Also, try to watch it with the food--so much of it is rich and heavy on the stomach and that's not always the best mix with hot/humid weather.
The Sheraton is a nice hotel and it would probably be worth it to stay there. It's right on Canal and is a good location for getting to the French Quarter, Garden District, etc. There's a trolley stop close by, so that would be an option for transportation to the FQ or Garden District. I stayed there a few years ago for a convention and liked it.

Hi-
I was in New Orleans for the 4th of July weekend about 10 years ago, and as the other posters noted, it is swampy and hot--but I like it that way. I went to a convention last November at the Sheraton. I prefer to stay off-site at most meetings because they can be a total zoo. Depending on the size of your conference, there will probably be several other conferences going on at the same time, which can make things (elevators, coffee shop) really crowded. You would probably be able to find something relatively close and just as nice for less money. However, you can't beat the convience of running upstairs to your "own" bathroom. How much time will you have for sightseeing?

For those of us who aren't used to humidity, it can be a bit of an obsticle. I've had friends who have gone in August and had a good time, it's just a matter of being prepared. I'd recommend planning activities in the mornings and evennings and spending the afternoons napping or in a swimmingpool.

Weather is very humid if you are from up north. Love to walk but I was a little uncomfortable during the day. Much nicer after 4-5 PM. Excellent restaurants and lots to see if you can walk. Only complaint was the "smell" of Bourbon street, although after you spend a few hours down there you won't care. Enjoy . Loved the live music on Bourbon Street.

New Orleans in July will be very hot and humind ... as everyone else mentioned. BUT it's such a great place. If you have not been there before, just take the opportunity and go !!
Here are a few must do's ...
(1) Riverside walk
(2) Walk on decatur .... here's where u will see the cathedral, road side artists etc
(3) Coffee and beignets at the famous "Cafe du Mond". I always liked going there in the evening just before it gets dark....everything is so lively...people walking....and u can literally hear the missisippi river
(4) guess u have to take at least one walk on the world famous/infamous Bourbon Street
(5) Walk/Tour the french quarters
(6)Go to Pat O Brien's and get a hurricane. Even if you don't drink go for the experience
(7) Not a must do for most but I like this --- go to the revolving restaurant at the top of the world trade center (late evening/night) for drinks/dinner. Great view when u face Canal Street
There are a few more things...New Orleans has a pretty good IMAX, zoo and now a Harrah's casino right on Canal Street......
Sure it's hot and sticky. But if you have not been there before and do not mind hot weather, go and have fun !! I went to college in NO

Here's another one to tell you it will be sweltering in New Orleans in July! My brother got married in NO on the 4th of July, and I was five months pregnant at the time. Now that was uncomfortable, to say the least. But you know what? I had a great time in NO! It's such a fun city--so much to do and see, the food's fantastic--so what if the temperature is way up there? Small price to pay for a great place to visit!

Hot, sweaty, hot, sweaty, hot and did I mention SWEATY? New Orleans in July is like when you get out of a hot shower and discover that you forgot to turn on the fan or open the window. Your visiblity will be better than a hot steamy bathroom, but the temp and the humidity will be the same!
So, take tons of water with you, wherever you go, and prepare for your sweat to freeze instantly when you go into buildings that have A/C. Then be ready for all that frozen sweat to melt instantly and trickle all down your back and off your forehead, the nanosecond you step out of the A/C. No joke.
Now, that said.....New Orleans is a great city, and I hope you have a wonderful time!

LOL Budman....I wrote some pretty awful poetry in college. I don't think I'll quit my day job.
I went to three different high schools in southern Louisiana. My parents still live there, but I've lived overseas in England for a while. Totally different weather, LOL. Every time I go back to see my folks, I find it harder and harder to get used to the heat and humidity.
Still love NewArlins, though.
