New Orleans best musical performers

IWe're going to New Orleans Dec. 27-Jan 1, and we want to experience New Orleans best jazz, zydeco, and other music. I've read the posts that say where to go such as Rock n Bowl, Palm Court Jazz Club, Snug HarborJazz, Funky Butt, Preservation Hall. But who should we be looking to watch as all these places have a calendar and I don't know who is best to see. Any suggestions as we are trying to get our plans firmed up. By the way we are 55 year old couple. Thanks.

I've had to make similar decisions myself for our trip in December.

I'm sure it won't work for all performers, but some who have released albums have soundclips on Amazon that you can listen to.

We are going to see Jeremy Davenport at the FQB (I do like standards), and Delfaeyo Marsalis at Snug Harbour in addition to the Jazz brunch at Commanders.

Lets face it there are worse problems than being spoilt for choice

You really can't go wrong anywhere, but especially for Zydeco- it is best outside of New Orleans as some there aren't authentic and used enhanced music. Preservation Hall is true jazz- don't miss it.

We've enjoyed listening to Big Al Carson and the Blues Masters at the Funky Pirate, right on Bourbon Street. Huge man, nice voice, no cover, not so terribly loud. And if you're staying in the Quarter and are just out wandering, it's certainly convenient.

Preservation Hall, definitely. You have to get in line pretty early to get a seat(which we didn't), but it was a great experience.

This is a great forum!
Jacqui, where is FQB?
Budget Queen, can you give some tried and true place for zydec music?
Thanks to all of you for responding

FQB (French Quater Bar) is at the Ritz Carlton on Canal Street. Jeremy Davenport plays there most Thursday, Friday & Saturday nights from 9pm-1am (there is a jazz pianist before this).

Check out the calendar at Tipitina's on Tchoupitoulas and Napolean - www.tipitinas.com -
I notice they're having an open jam session starting at 6pm on the December 28, free admission and free food and drinks.
Does anybody know if Harry Connick, Sr. is still performing with his group? I know he's retired after about 30 years as N.O.'s District Attorney. Worth seeing if he's around.
