New Orleans
Hi all. My wife and I will be spending a few day's in New Orleans in the new year. We are staying in the Holiday Inn (french quarter)
Does anyone know of this hotel?
We are from Australia and love jazz/blues.
What jazz and blue's nightclubs would you recommend.
What sort of day tours would you recommend?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cemetery tour is recommended (I haven't been but that's what I'm told). Swamp tours are interesting but many of the animals, particularly alligators, are rarely visible in winter because of lower temps. Not sure about blues clubs but Snug Harbor is highly recommended for jazz and if you want to get a feel for the local music two of the best spots are Tipitina's and the Maple Leaf Lounge. If you like traditionaal old-timey jazz I'm told that Preservation hall is a must. Regrettably, my visit was so short that I was unable to take in much live music.

When my husband and I were in New Orleans last May, we took a few tours that we really enjoyed.
The New Orleans Historical Walking Tour Co gives really good tours of the Quarter, Cemeteries, and Garden District. The guides are very knowledgable and they have a lot of good historical and cultural information about the area. The tours last a couple hours and cost about $15-20, which from what I saw was about average.
We took at plantation tour through Spinato Tours which was really interesting. I've heard Tours by Isabelle is good too.
We also took a swamp tour, which was great, but Owen makes a good point about the time of year you will be going. You probably wont see many animals, and depending on the weather you may not even want to be out on a boat.

I have stayed at the Holiday Inn (French Quarter) and it's a good location. Nothing fancy, though. But a note of caution, a friend stayed there a couple of weeks ago and had about $20 in coins from their casino visit stolen from inside their (unlocked) suitcase. Not smart, I know, but when they checked out, they told the front desk and were give credit for the approximate amount of the theft.
