New England Foliage/Maine Coast HELP

We have 10 nights, Oct 7 thru 17. We have booked flights into Bangor, Maine and have already booked a place to stay, will spend the first two nights at Bar Harbor and drive Arcadia - now, do you think it would be better to continue driving south down the coast or head into New Hampshire, then Vermont for the foliage and wrap around a loop to try and drive up the Maine coast at the end. Our the White Mountains the best around Oct 9-11? Thank you for your help.

You are planning very late for the busiest time of year. Unlikely that you'll find anything in the White Mts still available for mid-Oct.

We just need base point ideas - I'm not looking for fancy B&B's - there are still hotels with rooms available I've checked - just wanting to wrap this up tonight if possible. This was a spur of the moment trip. We could always just stay along the coast of Maine but feel the need to see NH/VT

While still along the northern Maine Coast, check out the area around Blue Hill/Castine/Stonington (maybe 2 hours drive from Bar Harbor)...it is spectacular that time of year and often overlooked for the more famous Vermont drives. To my mind, the combination of seacoast and fall colour beats the mountains of Vermont/NH and its great fun to explore the areas around Wiscassett and further along the Maine coast down to Freeport, too.

Having said, that the drive from Bangor across Highway 1 in Maine and then into New Hampshire and on into Vermont (across St.Johnsbury, Montpelier and Burlington) is also very lovely that time of year. But MUCH more travelled-so book and enjoy either way.

You have to check the foliage reports as things can change week to week. Then you can plan your days in NH and Vermont as the peak-periods are announced.

mainefoliage.com is one of the sites you can watch

Acadia - thanks. I was up late reading last night. This was all spur of the moment so I'm trying my best to get a grip on the lay of the land and book my areas.

There are signs that the season will be spectacular but early, so position yourself accordingly.
