New England coast hotels. Any recommendations?

DH and I are switching gears. No longer planning a trip to Sturgis / Yellowstone. We decided we would be road dogs for too much of it.
Now we are planning a coastal trip of New England. We will start our trip with 3 nights in Cape Cod. We will have 8 more days to travel the coast and return to Syracuse NY. Any recommendations for hotels up the coast through NH into Maine? We don't want high end hotels if possible. (ex. Stageneck in Maine looks awesome but it's too pricey.) We will be hauling our trailer and motorcycles so need hotels with ample parking.
Thanks!

It's getting rather late to book coastal hotels for this summer so a lot of recommended places will already be sold out. Ample parking can also be difficult when you're dealing with a high-tourist area in high season with hotels generally full-up every night.

You could do a fodors search and find out previous recommendations for lodging near Portsmouth NH, Wells Maine, Kennebunkport Maine, Scarborough Maine, Camden, Boothbay, Belfast and Bar Harbor Maine. Have you found something on Cape Cod already?

Route 1 in southern Maine is literally lined with motels of all kinds. The Footbridge Beach Motel in Ogunquit is on the highway, but a 2 block walk to a great beach. The Lafayette Motel complex in Wells is directly on the beach. Neither are overly expensive.

zoottsi- thanks I'll check those out.

tracy- yes I have a Cape Cod booking and have found availability in other coastal towns in NH. Wanted to check in here first before booking anything. I have searched the forums too but still like to get new perspectives.

BedMap is good for finding out of the way places.

google Old Orchard Beach, lots of inexpensive motels near the beach.

If you have a day or a night, consider a visit to Mohegan Island in ME. It's a true treasure. If you make it up the coast to Camden, I had a fabulous stay at the Whitehall Inn, and it was reasonably priced for the area. Camden is quite a gem!

I would just add that yes, Route 1 has lots and lots of motels, but all have "no vacancy" signs from July 1st through most of August. Also, very little of route 1 is actually on the coast or by the water. If you're looking for something on the water like Stageneck Inn, but not as pricey, I would look at York Harbor Inn, Terrace by the Sea, Green Heron Inn, High Tide Inn, Colonial Gables, Beloins, and Belfast Harbor Inn. And I would wait and travel just after Labor Day if I could.

Thanks for the info. Dates are already set and at this point and there are still plenty vacancies. I have looked at some of your suggestions too. I'll look at the rest.
