Need to get from LaGuardia to 230 East 51st Street--ideas?
I am a first time New York traveler and will be doing so with my 12 yo son. Not sure the easiest and most direct way to get from airport to hotel. I have read pros and cons about the shuttle (will it take me directly to hotel) and a cab for 2. I appreciate any and all suggestions. Thanks in advance!

The easiest and most direct way is a taxi. That isn't the most economic way, but it does meet your two criteria.
I assume you're at the Pickwick Arms hotel?
If you're a light sleeper, you might want to get a room that doesn't overlook 51st Street. I used to live three doors down from there and between the garbage collection at the hotel and restaurants and the police and fire stations up the street, it could be noisy at night.
BTW, for a really reasonable, very good French restaurant try La Mangeoire on 2nd and 53rd. Their fixed price menu is really good value for the neighborhood.

A cab will be in the area of $30 to $35. The shuttle bus is, I believe, $15, each to Grand Central - then you would have to walk about 8 blocks - or cab it.
SuperShuttle takes you direct to the hotel (I think $17) - but take people to a bunch of differen hotels - so you can spend an hour driving around in NY traffic waiting for your turn. Also - they can be unreliable returning to the airport - never turn up at all.
(It is possible to take public transit for $4 each - but involves a bus, a subway and dragging your luggage up and down several sets of steps - and possibly trying to force your way onto a packed train with all your stuff.)

Thank you for your suggestions. I think a cab is our best bet!
Ryan, we are staying at The Pod hotel (formerly Pickwick) and I will most definetly ask for a room in the back of the hotel. Thanks for the heads up!

FYI: The New York Airport Shuttle will NOT take you to Grand Central at present. It now goes to Bryant Park instead (because of the repair working being done on Lexington avenue). You'd get a cab from there (6th Ave. and 42nd Street).
I'd recommend taking a cab. It will cost about $10 more and it's worth it if you can afford it.
I really hate Super Shuttle in NYC (it's good in other places). YOu have either an interminable trip with many, many stops, or the service is erratic. I've been stiffed twice on early-morning pick-ups. So I'll never do it again.

Thanks for the shuttle update and I will absolutely post my opinion on the Pod Hotel. I'll tell you the reviews on Trip Advisor was very good. I won't be going until December and will post then. Looking forward to our trip!
