Need ideas for a mountain vacation in New York.

We are looking at either the Adirondacks or Catskills the first or second week of June. We would like to rent a cabin somewhere in an area that is not all families and attractions for children. We like to fish, bike, hike and visit small towns. We are also open to anywhere else in the area that might fit the bill (1,000 Islands, Finger Lakes, etc.). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well, thousand island is flat - and finger lakes, while hilly, certainly isn;t mountainous. In fact, most ountains iN NY aren't very high.

Where are you coming from and how long do you want to drive to get to wherever. The Catskills are much closer to NYC, but also much more built up. The adirondacks is better for outdoorsy stuff - but more hours from the city.

For an Adirondack location take a look at these brand new cabins on White Lake, owned by a friend of a friend I can highly recommend them! http://www.adkbyowner.com/listings/VR6609.html There is a private beach and you are centrally located so you can use this as a base and venture out from there. And although it is a ‘by owner’ it DOES exists and is accurately represented on the website!

One thing to keep in mind is that early June is black fly season in the Adirondacks. Usually not a problem on a lake, but hiking anywhere in the mountains near rushing streams could turn into a nighmare, even with insect repellent. Or riding a bike near them. Around mid-July is when it ends.
